Keychain Sock by Petra Lassen
What is Being Made
This is a miniature knitted sock designed to function as a keychain accessory. The finished piece measures approximately 6.5 cm in length, making it a small decorative item perfect for attaching to keys or bags. Despite its diminutive size, the sock features authentic sock construction including a leg, heel, and heel turn, offering a complete garment structure in miniature form.
Techniques Used
The Keychain Sock employs several fundamental knitting techniques executed at a small scale. The project begins with casting on stitches distributed across multiple needles for working in the round, a technique that creates seamless circular knitting. The leg section is worked in stockinette stitch (smooth knit stitch) for a clean, classic appearance.
The heel construction uses the Rapphönans öga (also known as the eye of partridge or slipped stitch heel) method, which is worked flat back and forth over a subset of stitches. This traditional heel technique involves slipped stitches and knit stitches to create a durable, textured heel with excellent elasticity. The heel turn section uses decreases and directional shaping to form the characteristic heel corner. Stitches are then picked up along the heel sides to rejoin the work for the foot section, a technique essential to sock construction.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (slätst): Smooth knit fabric forming the leg of the sock
- Slipped stitch (lyft m): Used in the Rapphönans öga heel pattern for texture and durability
- Knit stitch (r): Primary stitch throughout
- Purl stitch (a): Used in heel construction and shaping
- Decrease stitches (a tills / llr): Used for heel shaping and turning
- Picked-up stitches: Applied along heel edges to continue knitting
Materials and Tools
This project requires minimal yardage, using only sock yarn scraps totaling 2–3 grams, making it an excellent stash-busting project. The pattern specifies Fabel yarn as an example suitable option. Knitting needles sized 2.00 mm are required for the main sock construction. The designer recommends using needles one or two sizes smaller than your typical sock needle size to ensure the finished sock is tight and durable.
A small keyring attachment completes the project; the pattern notes that Panduro carries keyring hardware in multiple sizes suitable for this application.
Difficulty Level
This project is classified as intermediate difficulty. While the sock is small and uses relatively few stitches, it requires solid understanding of circular knitting, heel construction techniques, and the ability to work with very fine gauge needles. Knitters should be comfortable reading knitting abbreviations and following multi-row stitch patterns before attempting this design.
