Product Description
Kelsey is a lovely California born and raised girl living in Sweden, brave enough to take on the rather harsh Swedish winters. She needed knee-high fingering weight socks for her boots and asked me about it, I found it quite an inspiring task. The sample has a cable lace pattern on the front of the foot and leg of one sock. On the other sock the stitch pattern shows up on the back of the leg. The pattern describes both variations so you can knit 2 socks with the cable lace pattern on the back, or a pair with the cable lace pattern on the front, or one of each like the sample. The pattern is written for magic loop, but it can easily be transformed to be knitted on DPN:s.
Kelsey's Socks by Lena Strandberg
What is Being Made
Kelsey's socks are a pair of knee-high fingering weight socks designed by independent designer Lena Strandberg. These socks were created for a California-born wearer living in Sweden who needed warm, durable legwear suitable for harsh Swedish winters and compatible with boot wear. The design features decorative cable lace patterning and offers flexibility in placement and styling options.
Design Features and Pattern Variations
The socks showcase a cable lace pattern that can be positioned in multiple ways to suit individual preferences. The sample pair demonstrates asymmetrical placement: one sock features the cable lace pattern on the front of the foot and leg, while the matching sock displays the pattern on the back of the leg. This versatile design allows knitters to customize their finished pair in three different ways:
- Both socks with the cable lace pattern on the back
- Both socks with the cable lace pattern on the front
- One sock with the pattern on the front and one on the back, matching the designer's sample
Knitting Techniques Used
Kelsey's socks are worked using the toe-up construction method, which allows knitters to begin at the toe and progress toward the calf. This approach provides excellent fit customization since the leg length can be adjusted before binding off. The pattern is primarily written for the magic loop technique, a method that uses a single long circular needle to work small circumference projects in the round. However, the pattern can be easily adapted for knitters who prefer working with double-pointed needles (DPNs), offering flexibility for different skill levels and equipment preferences.
Heel Construction Options
The pattern features an afterthought heel with gusset as the primary heel construction method. This technique creates a roomy, deep heel that accommodates those who find standard afterthought heels too narrow or uncomfortable. The gusset construction adds extra depth and volume in the heel area, providing enhanced comfort and support. For knitters who prefer a different approach, the pattern also allows for substitution of a standard afterthought heel if desired.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern featured in Kelsey's socks is cable lace, which combines cable stitches with lace elements to create an elegant, textured design. This stitch pattern requires intermediate knitting skills and knowledge of cable manipulation and lace techniques. The cable lace motif serves as the decorative focal point of the socks and can be strategically placed on either the front or back of the leg depending on the knitter's preference.
Materials and Specifications
Kelsey's socks are designed for 4-ply fingering weight yarn, a fine yarn weight that creates lightweight, durable socks suitable for wearing inside boots without adding bulk. Fingering weight yarn is the traditional choice for sock knitting and allows for detailed stitch definition, making the cable lace pattern clearly visible. The pattern is worked in the round using either a circular needle (magic loop method) or double-pointed needles, depending on the knitter's preference and experience level.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic stockinette stitch. Knitters should be comfortable with cable stitches, lace techniques, and working in the round before attempting this project. The toe-up construction and afterthought heel with gusset add technical elements that require intermediate-level skills and understanding of sock architecture.
Pattern Format
Kelsey's socks are available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing immediate access to the complete instructions. The pattern is written and copyrighted by Lena Strandberg and includes detailed guidance for both magic loop and DPN adaptations, heel options, and multiple design variations.
