It’s a 2/2 garter stitch pattern—2 knits and 2 purls.

Keep It Straight(er) Dishcloth by Deb Buckingham
What Is Being Made
The Keep It Straight(er) Dishcloth is a beginner-friendly knitted dishcloth designed by Deb Buckingham. This project creates a finished square measuring approximately 9 inches by 9 inches, making it a practical and quick kitchen textile. The design is ideal for crafters seeking a straightforward, meditative knitting project that produces a useful household item.
Knitting Techniques Used
This dishcloth pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques accessible to beginners. The construction begins with a simple cast-on of 40 stitches, followed by garter stitch edging created by knitting several rows. The main body of the dishcloth features a repeating two-row pattern that is worked multiple times to build the fabric. The pattern concludes with additional garter stitch rows before binding off all stitches. Finishing involves weaving in yarn ends for a polished appearance.
Stitches Used
The Keep It Straight(er) Dishcloth uses only two fundamental stitches throughout the entire design:
- Knit Stitch: Creates the smooth, textured garter stitch borders and forms the knit columns within the main pattern repeat
- Purl Stitch: Works in alternating sections to create visual interest and texture variation within the repeating pattern
The two-row repeat alternates between a knit row on the right side and a mixed knit-and-purl row on the wrong side, with the purl stitches creating a distinctive ribbed effect within the overall fabric.
Materials and Specifications
This project requires minimal materials, making it an economical choice for crafters. A single ball of worsted weight yarn containing 82 yards is sufficient to complete the dishcloth. The pattern was designed using Sugar 'n Cream yarn. US 6 (4 millimeter) knitting needles are required to achieve the proper gauge of 4.5 stitches per inch, which ensures the finished dishcloth reaches its intended 9-by-9-inch dimensions.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Keep It Straight(er) Dishcloth is perfect for knitters new to the craft or those seeking a quick, confidence-building pattern. The exclusive use of knit and purl stitches, combined with straightforward row-by-row instructions, makes this an accessible introduction to textile creation.
