Product Description
Katie Koala is ready for a big hug! Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the koala is knitted on single pointed needles (not in the round). Katie and their scarf are worked in acrylic DK yarns (double knitting/light worsted). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish. The nose and mouth are embroidered onto the koala’s head.
Katie Koala Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
Katie Koala is a knitted toy design created by Amanda Berry. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a stuffed koala figure suitable for play or display. The finished toy is constructed using the knit-and-stuff method, a popular technique for creating three-dimensional amigurumi-style toys through flat knitted pieces that are subsequently assembled and filled.
Yarn Requirements
The pattern calls for 100% acrylic DK yarns (also known as double knitting, light worsted weight, or 8 ply). You will need approximately 30g of each of four yarn shades: Black, Grey, White, and Coral. This totals roughly 120g of yarn across all colors.
The original toy was knitted in discontinued yarns. Amanda Berry recommends substituting with Stylecraft Special DK or Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, both of which are 100% acrylic DK weight yarns suitable for this project. Any similar 100% acrylic DK yarns will work effectively for this pattern.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires the following materials and tools:
- A pair of 3.25mm (US 3) single pointed needles, with a minimum length of 20cm
- A darning or tapestry needle for seaming and joining pieces together
- A few large handfuls of toy filling (polyester fiberfill or similar stuffing material) for padding the finished koala
- A pair of 10mm toy safety eyes for facial features
- A ruler or tape measure for checking gauge and measurements
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
As an intermediate-level knitting pattern, Katie Koala employs standard knitting construction methods. The toy is created by knitting separate flat pieces in the round or in rows, which are then seamed together using a tapestry needle. This modular approach allows knitters to work on manageable sections—such as the head, body, limbs, and ears—before assembling them into the complete three-dimensional koala form.
The use of DK weight yarn on 3.25mm needles creates a fabric with sufficient density to contain toy filling without gaps, while remaining workable for an intermediate knitter. The pattern incorporates color changes across the four yarn shades to create the koala's distinctive markings and features, including the characteristic black nose, grey body, white facial patches, and coral accents.
Finishing techniques include seaming pieces together with the tapestry needle, inserting safety eyes for secure facial features, and distributing toy filling evenly throughout the stuffed form to achieve proper shape and structure.
