Product Description
This is my version of the outfit that Kamala Harris wore on her Inauguration day. So much fun creating this piece of history. The outfit is done in US terminology. A fairly easy pattern to follow but you do need to know basic crochet stitches and how to follow a pattern.
The outfit is for any 18” doll. Instructions are for the pearls, jacket, dress and shoes.

Kamala Harris Inauguration Outfit Crochet Doll Clothing
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern from designer CraftyStitchaway provides instructions for creating a detailed inauguration-inspired outfit for dolls. The design recreates the elegant ensemble worn during a historic inauguration ceremony, featuring a structured jacket with collar details and a coordinating dress. This intermediate-level crochet project is ideal for crafters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-piece garments with varied construction techniques.
What Is Being Made
The pattern creates a complete doll outfit consisting of two main components: a formal dress and a tailored jacket. The dress is constructed in two separate pieces that are joined together, while the jacket features detailed elements including a collar, lapels, and pockets. The outfit is completed with coordinating shoes and pearl embellishments, creating a sophisticated formal look suitable for doll display or play.
Yarn and Materials
The primary yarn is worsted weight 4-ply, with the pattern specifically recommending Loops N Threads "Impeccable" in Grape Punch for the main garment pieces. A small amount of 1-ply cotton or baby yarn is required for creating the pearl details, and worsted weight black yarn is needed for the shoes. Additional materials include three small buttons for the back of the dress, stick pins for assembly, and an optional glue gun for securing embellishments.
Crochet Hooks and Tools
This pattern utilizes multiple hook sizes to achieve different fabric densities and details throughout the outfit:
- 1.75mm crochet hook – for creating the delicate pearl embellishments
- 2.5mm crochet hook – for the collar on the jacket, lapel details, and pockets
- 3.00mm crochet hook – for constructing the shoes
- 3.5mm crochet hook – for the sleeves on the jacket
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
The pattern employs fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to construct the garment pieces:
- Foundation chain (ch) – the starting base for each component
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and connecting pieces
- Single crochet (sc) – a basic stitch forming the primary fabric structure
- Half double crochet (hdc) – provides slightly more drape and height than single crochet
- Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – a decrease technique for shaping the garment
- Half double crochet 2 together (hdc2tog) – an alternative decrease method for specific sections
- Skip (sk) – creates openings and shaping within the pattern
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 3 inches by 3 inches equals 11 stitches and 8 rows. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the outfit fits properly on the intended doll size. Crafters should work a gauge swatch before beginning the project to verify their tension matches the pattern specifications.
Construction Method
The dress is constructed using a two-piece method, with the top portion and bottom portion created separately before being joined together. This modular approach allows for easier construction and potential customization. The jacket components are worked with varying hook sizes to create distinct textural elements, with the collar and lapels receiving finer detail work using a smaller hook. The pattern notes that crafters can alter or change design elements to create different outfit styles, offering flexibility for personalization.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with multiple pieces, decreases, and varied hook sizes. The project requires attention to detail, particularly when working the smaller embellishments and fine details of the jacket.
