Product Description
Simple cabled fingerless mitts in one size that accommodates a range of hand sizes due to the elasticity of the design, knit from cuff to fingers. The shaping on the cuff means the mitt hugs the inside of the wrist and is less likely to get in the way if you wear them while working. Cuff and finger length is adjustable to your preference.

What is Being Made
The Kallai Mitts are simple cabled fingerless mitts designed as a versatile accessory that accommodates a range of hand sizes in one universal size. These mitts are knit from cuff to fingers, making them practical for layering under jackets or wearing independently during milder weather. The fingerless design allows for full dexterity while keeping the hands and wrists warm.
Construction and Techniques
These mitts are constructed using knitting in the round, which creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for fitted wrist wear. The pattern employs cable techniques as the primary decorative element, with the designer offering flexibility in cable execution—knitters may use traditional cable needles or explore needle-less methods depending on their preference and skill level.
The design incorporates ribbing at the cuff, which provides essential elasticity and ensures the mitts stay securely in place on the wrist. The ribbing can be worked on smaller needles if desired, a common technique for achieving tighter, more elastic edges. The overall elasticity of the design is a key feature that allows the one-size pattern to fit various hand sizes comfortably.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (P) – used in combination with knit stitches to create textured patterns
- Moss Stitch (US Seed Stitch) – a textured stitch pattern that alternates knit and purl stitches to create a bumpy, reversible fabric
- M1 (Make One) – an increase technique used to add stitches; the pattern specifies the Backwards Loop method, though knitters may substitute other increase methods while maintaining pattern integrity
- TW2 (Twist 2) – a cable technique where the knitter works into the front of the 2nd stitch on the left needle, then the 1st stitch, before slipping both stitches off together, creating a twisted cable effect
- TW3 (Twist 3) – an extension of the twist technique, working into the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st stitches in sequence before removing all stitches, creating a more pronounced cable
Materials and Gauge
The Kallai Mitts require approximately 200 metres (220 yards) of fingering weight (4 ply) yarn, making this a relatively quick project suitable for stash-busting or trying new colorways. The yarn weight is thin and delicate, allowing for intricate stitch definition in the cable and moss stitch patterns.
Needles: 3 mm needles (or the size required to obtain correct gauge) for working in the round. The pattern notes that a smaller needle may optionally be used for the thumb ribbing to create a more elastic cuff.
Gauge: 16 stitches and 28 rounds measured over 5 centimetres (2 inches) in pattern. Achieving correct gauge is essential for ensuring the mitts fit properly and that the cable and moss stitch patterns display as intended.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Kallai Mitts are suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting and basic stitch techniques. The cable work and moss stitch require attention to pattern, and knitters should be comfortable reading stitch abbreviations and maintaining pattern consistency, particularly when using alternative increase methods.
