KaleidoKap by Sharon Mooney
What Is Being Made
The KaleidoKap (K248) is a knitted hat designed to fit large children through adults with head circumferences ranging from 20" to 23". This intermediate-level knitting project creates a colorful, patterned cap using a two-color knitting technique that showcases vibrant color work.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft. The KaleidoKap employs circular knitting as its primary construction method, which allows for seamless, tubular fabric creation. The design utilizes two-color knitting (also known as stranded colorwork), a technique where two yarn colors are worked simultaneously to create intricate patterned designs across the hat's surface.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches and decreasing techniques essential for hat construction:
- Stockinette stitch — the primary stitch used throughout the hat, creating a smooth, classic fabric texture
- Knit stitch (K) — the basic foundation stitch
- Knit 2 together (K2tog) — a single stitch decrease used to shape the hat crown
- Make 1 (M1) — an increase technique for adding stitches where needed
- Bind off (Bo) — the finishing technique to secure stitches and complete the hat
The pattern also references color work abbreviations including main color (mc) and contrasting color (cc) applications throughout the design.
Materials and Tools
The KaleidoKap requires Malabrigo Merino Worsted yarn, a premium 100% Merino Wool option. Two skeins are needed: approximately one skein in color 625 Kaleidos for the main color and one skein in color 30 Purple Mystery for the contrasting color. Each skein contains 210 yards and weighs 3.5 ounces, making this an aran weight yarn project.
Knitting needles required include 16" circular needles in both US size 6 (for the ribbed cuff) and US size 8 (for the main body), plus a set of four US size 8 double-pointed needles for the crown decreases. Additional supplies include a split ring stitch marker for tracking rounds and a yarn needle or large embroidery needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 5 stitches and 7 rows per 1 inch when working stockinette stitch in the round using size US 8 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished hat fits correctly within the intended 20" to 23" head circumference range.
