Product Description
This hat is named after Kale, not the leafy green but one of Jupiter’s moons, pronounced KAY-lee. Kale is one of the Charites from Greek mythology and one of Zeus’s (many) daughters. Some myths also have her married to Hephaestus. This hat is reversible; I think the rib looks interesting on both sides. There is the option to do a contrasting cast on and button tab, plus two different gauges and you can go for just a ribbed brim or rib the whole thing!
This hat is worked from the bottom up in the round. The button tab is worked separately once the hat is completed and sewn on. Both written and charted instructions are included for the rib pattern and rib decrease section.
SizeSport - S (16.5/42) [M (17.75/45), L (19/48.5)] inches/cm. Worsted - S (16.5/42) [M (18/45.5), L (19.5/49.5)] inches/cm. To fit head circumference: S (17/43 to 19/48.5) [M (19/48.5 to 21/53.5), L (21 +/53.5 +)] inches/cm. Both versions shown in M, modeled on a 21 inch/53.5cm head.

Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental hat construction techniques. The reversible nature of the design relies on ribbed stitch patterns that create visual appeal from both sides. Knitters will work in the round to create the hat's crown and body, with options to incorporate contrasting elements through selective cast-on and button tab applications.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure in Kale is ribbing, which creates the characteristic texture that remains visually interesting when the hat is reversed. The pattern also incorporates stockinette stitch for gauge measurement purposes, allowing knitters to achieve proper fit and fabric drape.
Materials Required
Knitters will need needles and yarn appropriate to their chosen gauge:
- Sport Weight Version: US 6 (4mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rounds = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch
- Worsted Weight Version: Needles sized to obtain gauge of 17 stitches and appropriate row gauge in stockinette stitch
The downloadable PDF pattern provides complete materials lists and yardage requirements for each size and weight option.
Difficulty Level
Kale is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The reversible construction and multiple customization options provide an engaging challenge while remaining accessible to those comfortable with circular needle work and ribbed stitch patterns.
