Product Description
Kaiburr is a fun and easy fingerless mitts pattern that shows off self striping yarn with multi-directional knitting. With a little extra planning, you can place your favorite stripe on the center of the thumb, or place one red and one blue to express both your light and dark sides.
The hand of these mitts are worked from the fingers down, with a thumb gusset that is worked side to side from stitches picked up on one side of the hand and grafted to the edge of the other side. After the thumb gusset is completed, the cuff is worked in the round.

What is Being Made
Kaiburr is a pair of fingerless mitts designed to showcase self-striping yarn through creative colorwork. These mitts are available in two finished hand circumference sizes: 7 inches and 8 inches, with a length of approximately 6 to 7 inches from top to cuff (with rolled edges). The fingerless design makes them practical for activities requiring hand dexterity while keeping wrists and palms warm.
Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project features multi-directional knitting, a technique that creates visual interest by changing the direction of stitches throughout the pattern. This approach allows the self-striping characteristics of the yarn to be displayed in dynamic and unexpected ways. The pattern demonstrates how strategic directional changes can transform a simple mitts design into a visually striking finished piece.
The mitts are worked in small circumference knitting, a method ideal for creating fitted garments on the hands and wrists. This technique typically involves working in the round using appropriate needle sizes to maintain even tension and proper gauge across the narrow circumference.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is Stockinette stitch worked in the round, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. The gauge for this project is 9 stitches and 12 rows per 1 inch (2.5 cm) in Stockinette stitch in the round, providing a guide for achieving the correct finished dimensions.
Materials and Yarn
Yarn: The pattern calls for Must Stash Yarn Perfect Sock, a 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon blend. This yarn weight is fingering weight (also known as 4-ply), with a yardage of 440 yards per 100 grams. The project requires approximately 170 yards (155 meters) for the smaller size or 226 yards (207 meters) for the larger size.
The sample shown was knitted in the Anakin colorway. For matching pairs, the designer recommends using a Must Stash Yarn Must Match set of two matching 50-gram skeins. Alternatively, a single 50-gram skein can be used to create a matching pair by carefully tracking where in the color repeat each mitt begins.
Needles and Notions: Size 1 US (2.25 mm) needles are recommended for small circumference knitting, though needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the correct gauge. Additional materials include a stitch marker for tracking rounds, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scrap yarn for holding stitches during construction.
Skill Level
Kaiburr is rated as an intermediate knitting project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills in working in the round and managing multiple stitches on small needles. The multi-directional knitting technique adds complexity beyond basic mitts patterns, making it an engaging project for developing knitters seeking to expand their technical repertoire.
