Product Description
This beautiful body-hugging vest is worked from the neck down and has negative ease. The back begins with a provisional cast-on. After the back is worked to underarm, the cast-on is taken out and each front is worked to underarm again. Then both front and back are worked at the same time. Therefore, there are no seams to sew. The lace pattern is very easy to memorize and creates a flattering look.

What is Being Made
The K771 – Rail Road Tracks Vest is a body-hugging knitted waistcoat designed with negative ease for a fitted silhouette. This downloadable knitting pattern offers four size options with finished bust measurements of 30" (76 cm), 34" (86 cm), 42" (107 cm), and 44" (112 cm), with corresponding total lengths ranging from 21" (53 cm) to 24" (61 cm). The vest features an armhole depth of 9–10" (23–25 cm) depending on size, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various body types and styling preferences.
Construction Technique
This vest is worked seamlessly from the neck down using a strategic construction method that eliminates the need for seaming. The back panel begins with a provisional cast-on and is worked to the underarm. Once the back reaches the underarm depth, the provisional cast-on is removed and each front panel is worked separately to the same underarm point. At this stage, both the front and back pieces are worked simultaneously in the round, creating a cohesive garment without seams. This top-down, seamless approach provides excellent fit control and allows for easy adjustments during the knitting process.
Stitches and Lace Pattern
The vest features a lace pattern that is described as very easy to memorize, making it accessible to intermediate-level knitters. The lace design, which references railroad tracks in the pattern name, creates visual interest and texture throughout the garment while maintaining a lightweight, breathable fabric suitable for layering.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: Light Green Plymouth Select DK Merino Superwash in 100% fine Merino wool, DK weight. Each ball contains 130 yd per 50 g, requiring 5–8 balls depending on the chosen size.
- Needles: US Size 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles and a 29" (74 cm) long circular knitting needle in US Size 5 (3.75 mm) for ribbing and other sections requiring a smaller gauge.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working lace stitches, managing a provisional cast-on, and working seamlessly in the round. The straightforward lace repeat and top-down construction make it an excellent project for advancing beyond beginner techniques.
