Product Description
Recently several friends and my sister were diagnosed with different types of cancer. I designed this hat for whoever is going through chemo therapy due to cancer. The pattern represents life, growth, and health. All the things I wish for all of them. The hat is made in very soft yarn and is head hugging.
K739 – Good Luck Chemo Cap by Nazanin Fard
What is Being Made
The K739 – Good Luck Chemo Cap is a thoughtfully designed knitted hat created to provide comfort and support for individuals undergoing chemotherapy treatment. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished cap with symbolic meaning, as the designer created this pattern for friends and family members facing cancer treatment. The hat is worked in the round using double-pointed needles, resulting in a seamless construction ideal for a comfortable, close-fitting head covering.
Design Inspiration and Meaning
Designer Nazanin Fard created this pattern with deep personal motivation, having designed the cap for loved ones diagnosed with various types of cancer. The stitch pattern and construction represent themes of life, growth, and health, making this more than a functional garment—it serves as a meaningful handmade gift during a challenging time.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate knitting project employs several essential techniques that add visual interest and shaping to the cap:
- Circular knitting: The cap is worked in the round using a set of four double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a seamless, comfortable fit
- Ribbing: The foundation begins with 14 rounds of k2, p2 ribbing, which provides stretch and elasticity around the head opening
- Increases and decreases: Strategic placement of yarn overs (yo), M1 increases, and p2tog decreases create the stitch pattern and shaping throughout the cap
- Stitch manipulation: The pattern includes specialized decreases such as S2kp2 (slip 2 stitches as if to k2tog, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over) for refined shaping
- Stockinette stitch: The primary fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
Stitches and Stitch Pattern Details
The K739 pattern incorporates a variety of knitting stitches to create both structure and decorative elements:
- Stockinette stitch (knit in the round): Forms the main fabric of the cap
- Ribbing (k2, p2): Creates the elastic cuff at the base of the cap
- Purl stitches: Worked strategically throughout the pattern to create textural contrast and stitch definition
- Yarn overs (yo): Create decorative openwork elements and contribute to the pattern's symbolic representation of growth
- Make 1 increases (M1, M1B, M1P): Used for invisible increases that maintain pattern continuity
- Purl 2 together (p2tog): Decreases that work in harmony with the pattern structure
- Slip 2, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over (S2kp2): A centered double decrease used for refined shaping
Materials and Specifications
The K739 – Good Luck Chemo Cap is designed to be worked with worsted weight yarn, providing a durable, warm fabric suitable for a head covering. The pattern requires a set of four double-pointed needles in size 7 (4.5 mm) and a tapestry needle for finishing. The stitch gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch when worked with size 7 needles or the size needed to obtain gauge.
Pattern Construction
The cap begins with casting on 104 stitches and joining to work in the round, with careful attention to avoid twisting. The first 14 rounds establish the ribbed cuff using k2, p2 ribbing for a secure, stretchy edge. Following the ribbing, the pattern transitions into the main stitch pattern, which increases to 112 stitches and incorporates the symbolic elements of growth and health through strategic yarn overs and increases. The pattern instructions continue with alternating right-side rounds (odd numbered) that feature the main stitch pattern and wrong-side rounds (even numbered) where knit stitches are knitted and purl stitches are purled, maintaining the pattern integrity throughout.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with found
