What Is Being Made
The Juno Beanie is a knitted hat designed as an intermediate-level project. This beanie combines classic knitting construction with decorative cable detailing, creating a finished garment suitable for everyday wear. The pattern produces a fitted head covering that works well with aran-weight yarn.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to construct the beanie. The primary method is knitting in the round, which creates a seamless tubular fabric ideal for hats. The pattern incorporates basic cable stitches for textural interest and visual appeal. Decreasing techniques are used to shape the crown, utilizing both knit two together and purl two together decreases to taper the hat to its finished point. Additional techniques beyond these core skills are explained within the pattern instructions, making it accessible to knitters developing intermediate-level abilities.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch
- Purl stitch
- Knit two together (k2tog) decrease
- Purl two together (p2tog) decrease
- Basic cable stitches
Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions
Yarn: The pattern calls for approximately 1.1 skeins of aran-weight yarn. The original design uses Feeling Good Yarn by Wool and the Gang, which contains approximately 25% nylon or polyamide in its composition for durability and elasticity. Alternative yarns tested by pattern developers include Katia Cotton Merino, Loops and Threads Metallic Luxe, and Drops Air (worked with an additional fingering-weight yarn thread). Any aran-weight yarn meeting the specified gauge will work for this project.
Needles: The pattern requires two sets of circular needles. The main needles are 4 mm (US size 6) circular needles measuring 40 cm (16 inches) in length. Larger 5 mm (US size 8) circular needles of the same length are used for the ribbed cuff. For a looser fit, 4.5 mm (US size 7) needles may be substituted for the main needles.
Additional Notions: A tapestry needle is essential for weaving in yarn ends. Optional notions include a cable needle for managing cable stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and a round counter for tracking completed rows.
Gauge and Fit
The stockinette stitch gauge for this pattern is 15 stitches and 23 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches). Achieving correct gauge is important for proper fit. The pattern includes specific measurements for the finished beanie, ensuring the hat will fit appropriately when worked to the specified gauge with recommended yarn.
