June Lake Knit Top by Afifa Knits Designs
Project Overview
June Lake is a versatile knit top designed as a go-to garment for spring and warm weather wear. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a body-flattering tunic that can be styled over shorts, jeans, or skirts, making it suitable for multiple occasions and wardrobe combinations. The design features a gradual A-line cut that provides flattering shaping while remaining accessible to beginner knitters.
What You Will Make
This pattern produces a fitted tunic-length top with a classic silhouette. The garment is designed with negative ease at the chest (approximately 2 inches), meaning it will fit snugly against the body for a tailored appearance. The finished chest measurements range from 38 inches to 56 inches, accommodating sizes from extra small through 3X-large, ensuring broad size inclusivity for different body types.
Knitting Techniques Used
June Lake employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The construction utilizes decrease shaping to create the A-line silhouette, with paired decreases worked symmetrically on the front piece. The pattern uses stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, which creates a smooth, classic appearance ideal for showcasing yarn characteristics and colorways.
The pattern incorporates slip stitch techniques for edge finishing, using slipped stitches with yarn in front (sl1wyif) to create neat, finished edges. This method produces a professional-looking selvage that is easier to seam and provides a polished appearance to the completed garment.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Stockinette stitch – The primary stitch pattern, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, V-textured fabric
- Knit stitches (k) – Used throughout the pattern for shaping and structure
- Purl stitches (p) – Worked on wrong-side rows to create stockinette fabric
- Slip stitches (sl1wyif) – Slipped stitches with yarn held in front, used at edges for clean selvages
- Decrease stitches – Specifically ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) worked symmetrically to create the A-line shaping
Materials and Yarn Requirements
June Lake is designed to be worked in fingering weight yarn, which is a lightweight yarn suitable for creating delicate, drapey garments. The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from approximately 700 yards for the smallest size (38 inches) to 1,250 yards for the largest size (56 inches).
The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Inner Yarn Zen Superwash Fingering, a 100% superwash merino yarn available in approximately 400-yard skeins. The colorway featured is Forest, a dark green shade that showcases the smooth texture of the stockinette stitch. Superwash merino is an excellent choice for this project as it provides softness, breathability, and easy care through machine washing.
Needles and Tools
This pattern requires US size 4 (3.5 mm) knitting needles to achieve the correct gauge. The pattern also calls for a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming pieces together, and scrap yarn for placing stitches on hold during construction.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches by 32 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on US size 4 needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly given the negative ease design. Knitters should swatch before beginning the project to ensure their gauge matches the pattern specifications, as variations in tension can significantly affect the finished garment dimensions.
Difficulty Level
June Lake is rated as a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to knitters new to garment construction. The pattern uses straightforward stitches and simple shaping techniques. The primary skills required include working in stockinette stitch, executing basic decreases (ssk and k2tog), and basic garment assembly. The straightforward construction makes this an ideal pattern for crafters looking
