Product Description
Auroraknit's Blanket Group for support on Ravelry.
Joy's Blanket uses bobbles and cables to make simple rabbits as well as lace for a leaf edging. 1200m of yarn
The leaf edging may also be left off and the garter rows continues to make a plain edging if preferred. This takes approx 850m of yarn.
Pattern is both written and charted. A photo section is included to help with the lace edging.
Pattern has been tested. A larger/smaller blanket could be made by increasing/decreasing the knot section in sets of 8 rows/16 sts increased or decreased. This would affect the yardage.
Joy's Blanket by Auroraknit
Project Overview
Joy's Blanket is an intermediate-level knitting project designed to create a finished blanket using the DK weight yarn category. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Auroraknit offers a unique construction method that begins from the center and expands outward, resulting in a distinctive circular or spiral blanket design.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a complete blanket worked from the middle outward. The blanket can be constructed using either circular knitting methods or completed flat with seaming along a diagonal edge, providing flexibility in the knitting approach based on crafter preference and available equipment.
Knitting Techniques Used
Construction Method: The blanket employs a center-out construction technique, beginning with a closed cast-on at the center point and expanding concentrically as rows are added. This approach creates a unique geometric blanket structure.
Circular Knitting Options: The pattern accommodates multiple circular knitting methods. Crafters may begin with appropriate sock needles, then progress to a short cable circular needle, and finally transition to a longer cable circular needle as the blanket expands. Alternatively, the magic loop technique or other small-circumference working methods are viable options for the initial rounds.
Flat Construction Alternative: For those preferring flat knitting, the pattern can be completed flat with subsequent seaming along a diagonal edge. However, this method requires reversing stitch instructions on even rounds, converting knit stitches to purl and vice versa.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
Primary Stitch: Garter stitch forms the foundation of this blanket pattern. Garter stitch creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges and is achieved by knitting every row when working flat or alternating knit and purl rounds when working in the round.
Edge Options: The pattern provides instructions for both a decorative edge and a plain edge variation. The plain edge option requires following specific garter stitch row instructions as detailed in the pattern documentation.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for DK weight yarn in a total yardage of either 1200 meters for the standard version or 850 meters for the plain edge variation. DK weight yarn is a medium-weight category suitable for creating blankets with good drape and structure.
Needles: Knitting needles in 3.75mm size are required for this project. The pattern accommodates a progression of needle types: starting with sock needles (typically double-pointed needles), transitioning to a short cable circular needle, and advancing to a longer cable circular needle as the blanket grows in circumference.
Gauge and Sizing
The tension specification for this blanket is 20 stitches by 30 rows, measured across the whole blanket. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished size and fabric characteristics.
Pattern Features
The pattern includes a comprehensive abbreviations section for reference throughout the knitting process. The closed cast-on method at the blanket's center can be executed using either a figure-of-eight cast-on technique with 12 stitches or a standard cast-on of 12 stitches with the yarn end used to close the resulting hole in the center.
