Product Description
This Jolly Gingerbread House display would make a super knitted centrepiece to your festive dinner table, buffet or mantlepiece, perhaps with a dusting of fake snow too! The knitting pattern includes instructions to knit the house, snowman, tree and display mat. The roof of the gingerbread house uses a 2 colour honeycomb slip stitch pattern to make the textured icing. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, this pattern is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round), and the icing on the house are knitted i-cord which is worked on two DPNs. For intermediate knitters and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish. The display mat is 23cm x 23cm, house is 17cm tall x 15cm wide x 13cm deep, snowman is 9.5cm tall and tree is 10cm tall.

Project Overview
The Jolly Gingerbread House is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed to create a charming decorative toy set. This project combines multiple knitted components to build a complete festive gingerbread house display with accompanying accessories, making it an engaging craft for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a complete gingerbread house toy set featuring a main gingerbread house structure along with coordinating festive decorations. The set includes a knitted snowman figure and a decorative knitted tree, creating a full holiday-themed display piece. All components are constructed through knitting and assembled together to form the finished toy.
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
The Jolly Gingerbread House employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The pattern utilizes both single-pointed needles and double-pointed needles (DPNs) for different components, allowing for both flat pieces that require seaming and circular or three-dimensional sections. Seaming with a darning or tapestry needle joins the various knitted pieces together. The construction method involves knitting individual components separately before assembly, a common approach for toy and amigurumi-style projects.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the available pattern information, intermediate knitting patterns of this type typically incorporate basic stitches such as knit, purl, increases, and decreases to shape the gingerbread house walls, roof, and decorative elements. The use of both single-pointed and double-pointed needles suggests the pattern includes both flat knitting sections and potentially some circular knitting for dimensional features.
Yarn and Materials
The Jolly Gingerbread House is knitted using 100% acrylic DK yarn (double knitting weight, also known as light worsted or 8 ply). You will need approximately 100g of yarn per color, with a yardage of around 290 meters per 100g skein. The pattern requires five yarn colors: Brown, White, Green, Yellow, and Pink. The recommended yarn is Yarnsmiths Create Double Knit in these coordinating shades.
Needles and Tools Required
- One pair of 3.5mm (US 4) single-pointed needles, minimum length 20cm
- One pair of 3.5mm (US 4) double-pointed needles (DPNs), minimum length 10cm
- A darning or tapestry needle for seaming knitted pieces
- A sewing needle and thread for attaching buttons and embellishments
- Pins for blocking and assembly
- A ruler or tape measure for measuring gauge and finished dimensions
Notions and Embellishments
Beyond yarn and needles, this project incorporates several decorative elements to complete the festive appearance. The pattern includes fifteen 8mm decorative buttons in three colors: pink (six buttons), yellow (six buttons), and white (three buttons). These buttons add detail to the gingerbread house design. For the snowman component, two 4mm domed black buttons serve as eyes. A white 3mm ribbon bow decorates the wreath element of the set.
Stuffing and Additional Materials
To create a three-dimensional, plush toy, the pattern requires 250g of toy filling (polyester fiberfill or similar stuffing material). Additional embellishment materials include cosmetic blusher for adding rosy cheeks to the snowman figure, and a 4cm diameter circle of cardboard used in constructing the decorative tree component.
Difficulty Level and Craftsmanship
Classified as an intermediate project, the Jolly Gingerbread House is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knitting fundamentals and are ready to tackle multi-component projects requiring assembly and finishing. The combination of different needle types, seaming techniques, and embellishment application makes this an engaging project that builds practical skills in toy construction and detailed finishing work.
