Jolan Socks by Zsuzsanna Orthodoxou
What Is Being Made
The Jolan Socks are a toe-up knit sock design created by Zsuzsanna Orthodoxou in collaboration with indie dyer Judy of GigglingGecko yarns. Named after the designer's mother who taught her to knit, these socks feature nature-inspired construction and are worked from the toe upward to the calf. The design emphasizes avoiding extensive purling by utilizing an innovative inside-out knitting technique, making them an appealing project for knitters who prefer working knit stitches.
Techniques Used
The Jolan Socks employ several specialized knitting techniques to create a polished, professional finish:
- Figure 8 Cast-on: The sock begins with this method, a popular toe-up cast-on technique that creates a seamless toe foundation
- Inside-Out Construction: After completing the toe, the sock is turned inside out and worked on the wrong side, allowing knitters to work primarily in knit stitches rather than purling
- German Short Rows: Used to construct the heel, this technique creates a structured heel that resembles the fit and appearance of commercially manufactured socks
- Elastic Bind-off: The cuff is finished with an elastic bind-off method, providing stretch and comfort around the leg opening
Stitches Used
The Jolan Socks feature a combination of stitch patterns that create visual interest and texture:
- Leaf Stitch Pattern: The primary decorative stitch worked throughout the foot and leg sections, creating a delicate, nature-inspired motif that complements the sock's design inspiration
- 2x2 Rib Stitch: Used for the cuff finish, providing elasticity and a classic sock appearance
Materials
The Jolan Socks are designed to be worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a standard fingering or sock-weight yarn that provides the appropriate gauge and drape for comfortable, well-fitting socks. The design was developed in collaboration with GigglingGecko yarns, featuring beautiful green colorways inspired by nature. Knitters will need appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn, typically in the US 0-2 range, suitable for working small circumference knitting in the round.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Jolan Socks are suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. The design introduces specialized methods such as German short rows and the Figure 8 cast-on, while the innovative inside-out construction adds a creative element that experienced beginners can confidently tackle.
