Joey Hat by Michelle Ferguson
What Is Being Made
The Joey Hat is a beginner-friendly crochet hat designed by Michelle Ferguson, available in three sizing options to fit toddlers, children, and adults. This downloadable crochet pattern produces a finished hat with a structured brim and crown, suitable for various head circumferences ranging from 18 to 22 inches. The design can be customized with an optional pom-pom accent.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Joey Hat pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it ideal for beginners developing their skills. The hat is worked in the round, combining both joined and unjoined rounds to create the structure. The pattern incorporates specialized techniques including working into the back loop only (blo) for textured sections and working into the third loop of previous stitches to create dimensional details. The designer provides video tutorial references to guide crafters through less common techniques, ensuring accessibility for newer crocheters.
Stitches Used
The Joey Hat utilizes several essential crochet stitches that form the foundation of the design:
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation and increase stitches throughout the pattern
- Single crochet (sc) – Provides dense, structured fabric in key areas
- Half double crochet (hdc) – The primary stitch used throughout most of the hat, creating a balanced fabric weight and drape
- Half double crochet 2 together (hdc2tog) – Used for decreasing stitches to shape the crown
- Half double crochet V-stitch (hdc-v) – Creates decorative increases using (hdc, ch 1, hdc) all in one stitch for textural variation
- Third loop half double crochet (3rd loop hdc) – A specialized technique that works into the third loop of previous stitches for dimensional effects
Materials Required
The Joey Hat requires minimal materials, making it an economical project for crocheters:
- Yarn: 130 to 200 yards of worsted weight (#4) yarn. The sample was created using Caron Simply Soft, a popular acrylic yarn choice for its softness and affordability
- Crochet hook: I/9 (5.5mm) size, appropriate for worsted weight yarn
- Additional tools: Scissors, measuring tape, yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch marker for tracking rounds, and an optional pom-pom for finishing
Sizing and Gauge
The pattern provides three distinct sizing options to accommodate different age groups and head sizes. Toddler sizing fits head circumferences of 18 to 20 inches, child sizing accommodates 20 to 21 inches, and adult sizing fits 21 to 22 inches. The gauge is measured within the brim at 8 stitches by 7 rows equaling 2 inches, helping crocheters verify their tension matches the pattern specifications for proper fit.
Difficulty Level
Rated as beginner-friendly, the Joey Hat is designed for crocheters new to hat construction or those building foundational skills. The straightforward stitch combinations and clear pattern structure make it an excellent introductory project for learning to work in the round and manage increases and decreases in circular crochet.
