Joan Set-In Sleeve Sweater by Christal LK Designs
What is Being Made
Joan is an advanced-level knitted sweater featuring set-in sleeves, designed by Christal LK Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern provides comprehensive instructions for creating a fitted pullover sweater with precisely engineered sleeve caps that are sewn into armholes for a polished, tailored finish. The sweater is suitable for experienced knitters seeking a structured garment with professional construction techniques.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft. The sweater employs advanced knitting methods including set-in sleeve construction, which requires shaping both the armhole and sleeve cap to create a fitted, tailored silhouette. The pattern utilizes short rows as a key shaping technique, allowing for precise three-dimensional shaping without visible seams in critical areas.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The primary stitch used throughout Joan is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance. The pattern incorporates German short rows (also called German short row wraps) as a specialized technique for shaping. This method involves turning the work mid-row and creating a double stitch by slipping one stitch purlwise with strategic yarn positioning—bringing yarn over the right-hand needle to the back of the work when turning on knit rows, or bringing yarn to the front between needles when turning on purl rows. This advanced technique prevents holes and creates seamless shaping transitions.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The suggested yarn is Garnstudio DROPS Sky, a DK weight yarn composed of 74% Alpaca, 18% Polyamide, and 8% Wool. This fiber blend provides warmth, elasticity, and durability. The yarn yields 190 meters per 50-gram ball, with the recommended color being dusty pink. Total yardage requirements range from 1200 to 1998 yards depending on size, requiring 7 to 10 balls.
Needles required include 4mm (US 6) circular needles—one 100cm (40") needle for working the body in the round, and one 60cm (24") circular needle or double-pointed needles for the smaller circumference sections such as cuffs and neckline. Blocking is recommended after completion to achieve the specified gauge of 23 stitches and 30 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch.
Construction Notes
The pattern includes a knitted cast-on method for beginning the project. The PDF format provides detailed written instructions alongside illustrations and images created by designer Christal LK (Christelle Nihoul), with all content copyrighted to Christal LK Designs as of 2019. Video tutorials are referenced within the pattern to support knitters in mastering the German short row technique and other advanced methods essential to successful completion.
