What is Being Made

The Jazmyn hat is a seamless, crown-to-band knitted hat available in two sizes. This design features colour work throughout and is intended to be worn with negative ease at the band for a snug fit, combined with a subtle slouch for a relaxed silhouette. The finished circumferences are approximately 44.5cm (17.5 inches) for the medium size and 53cm (21 inches) for the large size, with a finished length of 23cm (9 inches). The hat is suitable for wearers of all ages and is designed by independent designer Tracey Lee.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Jazmyn hat employs several key knitting techniques to create its structure and colour work design. The hat is worked seamlessly in the round from the crown downward to the band, eliminating the need for seaming. Increases are worked at the crown using both knit-forward-back (Kfb) stitches and Make 1 (M1) increases using the backwards loop method. The design incorporates colour work throughout, with the pattern repeating around the circumference. The number of pattern repeats varies between sizes, allowing the same increase chart to work for both the medium and large options. Stitches are managed using stitch markers, with the beginning of round marker slipped every round to maintain consistency.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches combined with colour work techniques. Core stitches include knit (K) and purl (P) stitches. Increases are achieved through Kfb (knit into the front and back of a stitch, with colour A worked into the front loop and colour B into the back loop) and M1 (Make 1 using the backwards loop method, always worked with colour B). All rows beginning on the crown of the hat start with colour A. The pattern is chart-based, allowing knitters to follow the colour work design visually. The design is flexible, allowing knitters to shorten the finished hat by completing the pattern on any row of the chart rather than working the full length.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Jazmyn hat is designed to be worked in 8 Ply/DK weight yarn, which is a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating fabric with good drape and stitch definition. DK weight yarn is ideal for colour work projects as it allows for clear stitch definition while maintaining reasonable working speed.
