Product Description
This is very secial to me - I developed this pattern as I was approached by a bride-to-be who asked if I could create something for her wedding tables.
At the time I was self employed and taught individuals and groups to knit and crochet. Rather than make them myself I taught the bride to crochet and sent her off with the materials and tools to carry on and she crocheted 10 more cosies.
I was a guest at the wedding and the cosies looked gorgeous, she even used her first 'beginners' one which she made with me, flaws and all.
Just Fred Jar Cosy
What Is Being Made
The Jar Cosy is a crocheted cylindrical accessory designed by Just Fred to fit around jars, providing both insulation and decorative appeal. This beginner-friendly project creates a textured fabric piece that expands gradually through strategic increases, forming a tube-like structure that accommodates standard jar sizes.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses crochet as its primary construction method. Crochet is a fiber craft that creates fabric using a single hook to form interlocking loops of yarn. The Jar Cosy employs in-the-round construction, a fundamental crochet technique where stitches are worked in continuous circular rounds rather than in rows, allowing the maker to build a seamless cylindrical form.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates several essential crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch): The foundation stitch used to create the initial loop from which the project begins
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds together and create a continuous circular structure without visible seams
- Double crochet (dc): The primary stitch throughout the pattern, worked in systematic increases to expand the diameter of the cosy as it grows taller
- Reverse double crochet/Crab stitch (rdc): A decorative finishing stitch that creates a textured, finished edge around the top of the completed piece
Construction Method and Increases
The Jar Cosy is constructed using a mathematical increase pattern that gradually expands the circumference. Beginning with a magic ring or chain foundation, the pattern starts with 6 double crochet stitches in round 1. Each subsequent round doubles the stitch count through strategic placement of increases: round 2 reaches 12 stitches, round 3 reaches 18 stitches, round 4 reaches 24 stitches, and round 5 reaches 30 stitches. This consistent increase pattern (adding 6 stitches per round) continues until the desired width is achieved, creating a perfectly proportioned cylindrical shape.
Materials Required
This project requires minimal materials, making it an economical and portable craft:
- Yarn: 1 ball of 50g chunky weight yarn in any color of choice
- Crochet hook: 6mm size, appropriately scaled for chunky yarn
- Yarn needle: For weaving in ends and finishing the piece
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Jar Cosy is ideal for those new to crochet. The pattern uses only basic stitches and a straightforward increase sequence, requiring no complex shaping, color changes, or advanced techniques. The in-the-round construction is an excellent introduction to circular crochet work.
