Jacket and Sweater in Stylecraft Amor Aran – Pattern 9800
Pattern 9800 from Stylecraft is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern featuring two separate designs: a classic knitted jacket and a knitted sweater, both worked in Stylecraft Amor Aran weight yarn. The pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty and offers an impressive size range, catering to bust measurements from 81–86 cm (32–34 in) up to 122–127 cm (48–50 in), making it an inclusive choice for a wide range of knitters. Both garments are designed with a raglan sleeve construction, giving them a comfortable, relaxed fit with clean diagonal shoulder lines.
Design 1: The Jacket
The jacket is a full-length knitted outerwear piece with a structured silhouette. Key measurements are as follows:
- Actual bust measurement: 98–139 cm (38½–54¾ in) across the size range
- Full length: 60–71 cm (23¾–28 in)
- Sleeve length: 43–45 cm (17–17¾ in)
The jacket is worked in Stylecraft Amor Aran in the shade Meadow 3756, requiring 4 to 6 x 100g balls depending on size. The back is begun on 4.5mm needles using a seeded rib for the lower border, which creates a subtly textured, stable hem. The seeded rib is formed over a specific two-row repeat:
- Row 1 (RS): P2, *k1, p1, k1, p2; repeat from * to end
- Row 2: K2, *p3, k2; repeat from * to end
This rib section continues for approximately 10 cm (4 in) before transitioning to the main body. Depending on the size being worked, a shaping row is introduced at the end of the rib section — either an increase row for smaller sizes or a decrease row for the largest size — to ensure the correct stitch count is achieved before moving to the body fabric.
The body is then worked in stocking stitch (stockinette) on 5mm needles, which is the primary fabric of the garment. The back continues in stocking stitch until the piece reaches the armhole, at which point raglan armhole shaping begins. Stitches are cast off at the beginning of two rows to set the armhole, and then a paired decrease method is used on every right-side row:
- RS decrease row: K3, sl1-k1-psso, knit to last 5 sts, k2tog, k3
- WS row: K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3
This technique uses sl1-k1-psso (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over) as a left-leaning decrease and k2tog as a right-leaning decrease, creating symmetrical, fully-fashioned raglan lines on either side of the back. The three-stitch garter borders on the wrong-side rows keep the armhole edges neat and stable. Shaping continues until the required number of stitches remain for the back neck, with additional shaping rows introduced for larger sizes to manage the extra width. Stitch holders and stitch markers are used throughout to manage live stitches and mark key construction points.
Design 2: The Sweater
The sweater is a slightly shorter, more casual knitted pullover, also featuring raglan sleeve construction. Its measurements differ from the jacket:
- Full length: 58–69 cm (22¾–27¼ in)
- Sleeve length: 26–28 cm (10¼–11 in), indicating a shorter, three-quarter or cropped sleeve style
The sweater is worked in Styl
