Product Description
THIS IS A LOOP YARN FINGER-KNITTING PATTERN. Irish Aran knitting patterns have a long and rich history, originating in the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Most commonly seen in sweaters, I have replicated those patterns here in blanket form. The Irish Aran Cabled Trellis Blanket design is a mixed pattern of chain cable, trellis and four-strand cabled braid. Each pattern within an Irish Aran knit design holds meaning: the trellis pattern is said to symbolize the stone-walled fields of the Northwestern farming communities, and is also a symbol of protection. This pattern is also known as lattice or basket stitch, and can also represent the fisherman's basket and good luck. Cables represent fishermen's ropes, safety and good fortune.
Irish Aran Cabled Trellis Blanket
What Is Being Made
The Irish Aran Cabled Trellis Blanket is a square throw blanket measuring approximately 44 inches by 44 inches (111.5 cm by 111.5 cm). This design combines traditional Irish Aran cable knitting techniques with a modern trellis pattern, creating a textured, decorative blanket suitable for both personal use and commercial production. The blanket is an original pattern by designer Reena Belford of I LOVE MY BLANKET.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses knitting as its primary craft method. The pattern is rated at intermediate skill level, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. A distinctive feature of this blanket's construction is that the right side of the project faces at all times, and you do not turn your work at the end of rows. This approach creates a consistent visual presentation throughout the knitting process and ensures the cable and trellis patterns display correctly on the finished piece.
The design incorporates cable stitches characteristic of traditional Irish Aran knitting, combined with a trellis motif that adds visual interest and texture. These techniques require understanding how to cross stitches over one another to create the raised, dimensional patterns that define Aran-style blankets.
Materials and Yarn
The Irish Aran Cabled Trellis Blanket is worked in super chunky weight yarn. The pattern calls for 9 balls of Lion Brand Off-The-Hook Yarn, with each ball containing 3.5 ounces (100 grams). The sample image shown features the colorway Beach Sand.
While the pattern is specifically designed for Lion Brand Off-The-Hook Yarn, it is compatible with any brand of loop yarn. However, crafters should note that variations in loop size and weight across different yarn brands may affect the final dimensions and drape of the completed blanket. Loop yarn, also known as chunky loop or bulky loop yarn, creates a distinctive looped texture that works beautifully with cable patterns and produces a blanket with significant visual texture and warmth.
