Product Description
Iris stitch is another one of my favorite stitches. It has a flower-like look, it creates a "Holey" fabric and still has more of a modern look. It's also a great stitch to use in blankets or as a border.
The stitch consists of dc's and chain, and that's why it also works up really fast, which is a bonus!
Skill Level - easy (requires some experience)
The pattern is written using English (U.S) terminology.

Iris Stitch In a Square Hotpad by Gootie
Project Overview
The Iris Stitch In a Square Hotpad is an intermediate-level crochet project designed by Gootie (Agat Rottman-Cassel). This downloadable PDF pattern creates a functional hotpad suitable for protecting surfaces from hot dishes and beverages. The finished piece showcases the decorative iris stitch worked into a square format, making it both practical and visually appealing for kitchen use.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a square hotpad—a heat-resistant textile accessory commonly used in kitchens and dining areas. Hotpads serve the practical purpose of protecting tables, countertops, and other surfaces from heat damage caused by hot cookware, dishes, and beverages. The square shape provides a compact, versatile size suitable for everyday kitchen needs.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Iris Stitch In a Square Hotpad employs several fundamental crochet techniques to create its finished structure:
- Chain stitch (ch): The foundation stitch used to begin the project and create the base chain from which subsequent rows are worked
- Single crochet (sc): A basic, tight stitch that provides structure and density to the fabric
- Double crochet (dc): A taller stitch used to create openwork areas and add height variation to the design
- Double V stitch (D-V): The signature stitch featured in this pattern, which creates the distinctive iris motif by working two stitches into the same stitch or space, forming a V-shaped pattern that repeats across the square
- Stitch spaces (sp): The gaps created between stitches that allow for openwork sections and contribute to the pattern's visual interest
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Iris Stitch In a Square Hotpad is worked using DK weight yarn, which provides a balanced fabric weight suitable for a functional kitchen accessory. The pattern specifically recommends worsted weight yarn (listed as #4 weight in the materials section), though the designer used Knit Picks Swish yarn for the sample. A 5.0 mm / H crochet hook is required to work this pattern. The specific total yardage requirement is not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, but the square format and intermediate difficulty level suggest a modest yardage suitable for a single hotpad project.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
Despite being labeled as intermediate difficulty, the pattern description notes an easy skill level, making it accessible to crocheters with some foundational experience. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing crafters to access the instructions digitally and print them as needed. Standard US crochet abbreviations are used throughout the pattern, making it compatible with most English-language crochet resources.
