Product Description
The Into the Weald cowl is worked in the round and begins with a twisted rib edging that grows through the texture towards the other end. The pattern includes both written and charted instructions.
This design is inspired by the Weald, an ancient area of woodland, meadows, rolling hills and open fields of South East England, that I’m lucky enough to have on my doorstep. My family and I usually have long country walks into the Weald to switch off, breathe and reconnect with nature.

Into the Weald Cowl by Upon a Yarn Designs
Project Overview
Into the Weald is a knitted cowl designed by Esther F. Lazaro of Upon a Yarn Designs in collaboration with Sóc Una Troca yarns. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a textured cowl inspired by the natural landscape of the Weald, an ancient woodland region in South East England characterized by meadows, rolling hills, and open fields. The design captures the essence of nature through its stitch pattern, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking a connection to the outdoors through their craft.
What is Being Made
The Into the Weald cowl is a circular neck accessory knitted in the round. The finished cowl measures 28 centimeters in height and comes in two circumference options: 60 centimeters for the Short size and 120 centimeters for the Long size. The Long size creates a generous, draped cowl suitable for wrapping around the neck multiple times, while the Short size offers a more fitted neckline option. Both sizes work well as a versatile layering piece for cool weather.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs knitting in the round as its primary construction method, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric ideal for cowls. The pattern features a textured stitch pattern that draws visual inspiration from the natural landscape of the Weald. Cable work is incorporated into the design, as indicated by the inclusion of cable needle abbreviations in the pattern instructions. The texture creates visual interest while remaining accessible to beginner-level knitters.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The Into the Weald cowl uses fundamental knitting stitches combined with more decorative elements. The pattern includes the following stitch techniques:
- Knit stitches form the base of the fabric
- Purl stitches create contrast and texture within the pattern
- Knit through the back loop (k tbl) adds subtle texture and twisted stitch details
- Cable stitches worked with a cable needle create the dimensional, nature-inspired textured pattern
The pattern provides both written instructions and charted instructions, allowing knitters to follow their preferred method of reading patterns. This dual-format approach makes the pattern accessible to knitters at various skill levels and learning preferences.
Materials and Yarn
The Into the Weald cowl is designed to be knitted with DK weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Sóc Una Troca's Rêverie, a soft single-ply Merino base that is gentle enough to wear next to the skin. Merino wool provides natural temperature regulation, breathability, and softness, making it an excellent choice for a cowl that will be worn close to the neck and face. The DK weight allows for a fabric with good drape and fluidity while maintaining enough structure to showcase the textured cable pattern. Knitters will need appropriate needles sized for DK weight yarn to achieve the correct gauge, typically in the range of US 3-5 (3.25-3.75mm), though the specific needle size should be verified in the pattern's gauge section.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent introduction to knitting in the round and working with cable stitches. While the cowl incorporates textured elements and cables, the straightforward construction and clear instructions—available in both written and charted formats—make it accessible to knitters new to these techniques. The repetitive nature of circular knitting combined with the pattern's logical stitch progression allows beginners to build confidence while creating a beautiful, wearable finished object.
