Product Description
Into The Stream is a lace weight crescent shawl, knitted from the lace edging up to the garter stitch short rows. The pattern takes its inspiration from a stream near my home, starting at the stones and tall grasses on the bank, moving through the bubbles and eddying cables to the flowing garter stitch section. Make it with a wool or wool-blend yarn to block the lace open and show off the beauty of the design.
The pattern uses charts for the lace and cable section. The short row garter section of the pattern uses written instructions.
The design has also been tested using fingering weight yarn, making a slightly larger shawl.
This pattern has been tested and professionally tech edited.

What Is Being Made
Into The Stream is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Kirsten McTeer. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a lace shawl inspired by a natural stream near the designer's home. The shawl features multiple stitch techniques and textural elements that work together to represent the flowing water, surrounding landscape, and light reflections of a stream environment.
Design Inspiration and Construction
The shawl incorporates several distinct sections, each representing different aspects of a flowing stream. The lace edging represents the pebbles, stones, and tall reeds and grasses found at the stream's edge. A cable section symbolizes the eddies and bubbles that form as water flows over and around obstacles. A mesh section captures the appearance of light dancing across the water's surface, while a garter stitch section represents the water itself flowing along its curving path. This layered approach to pattern design creates visual depth and movement throughout the finished piece.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate knitting project employs several key techniques:
- Lace knitting: Open, decorative stitchwork forms the edging and contributes to the mesh sections
- Cable knitting: Twisted stitch patterns create the textured cable section representing water movement
- Garter stitch: The fundamental knit-on-both-sides stitch forms the base water section
- Stockinette stitch: Used as the reference stitch for tension measurement
- Stitch marker placement: Twelve stitch markers help maintain pattern repeat accuracy throughout construction
Materials Required
The Into The Stream shawl requires the following materials:
- Yarn: 450 yards (411 meters) of heavy laceweight yarn
- Needles: One 3.25mm (US 3) circular needle measuring 100cm (40") long for main knitting, and one 4mm (US 6) circular needle measuring 100cm (40") long for casting on only
- Notions: 12 stitch markers, one cable needle for cable stitch work, and a darning needle for weaving in ends
Pattern Tension and Finished Size
The pattern is worked to a tension of 22 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, measured after washing and fairly aggressive blocking. While exact tension is not vital to the success of the project, tension will affect the finished dimensions of the completed shawl. Knitters should expect the shawl to be worked from a specific starting point as indicated in the full pattern instructions.
