Product Description

The Interconnected Socks were designed with mosaic slipped stitch patterning. They remind me of how we are all connected, although sometimes that connection is through another.

The mosaic patterning of these socks has less stretch than stockinette, but more than stranded knitting. The pattern offers two sizes: to fit leg circumference of ~8.25"/ 21 cm and ~9.25"/ 23.5 cm.

What is Being Made

Interconnected Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks featuring a bold mosaic motif. The design showcases overlapping squares that create a visual metaphor for human connection, with the pattern symbolizing how people are linked together, sometimes through indirect paths. The socks are available in two sizes: Medium (7.5 inches / 19 centimeters in circumference) and Large (8.5 inches / 22.5 centimeters in circumference). The pattern recommends choosing a size with approximately 0.75 inches / 2 centimeters of negative ease for an optimal fit.

Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project employs mosaic knitting, a colorwork technique that creates intricate patterned effects while maintaining relative simplicity in execution. The mosaic motif uses only one color per row, which eliminates the need for stranding or carrying multiple colors across the same row. To enhance the visual effect and create upward movement of the alternating colored lines, some stitches are slipped rather than worked, allowing the color blocks to shift and overlap organically. This technique produces the distinctive interconnected square pattern without the complexity of traditional two-color stranded knitting.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with mosaic-specific techniques:

  • Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch
  • Purl (p) – the basic purl stitch
  • Knit 2 stitches together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease
  • Purl 2 stitches together (p2tog) – a purl decrease
  • Slip stitch (sl) – stitches slipped as if to knit to create the mosaic effect and directional movement
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease worked by slipping two stitches individually as if to knit, then knitting them together through the back loops
  • Bind off (BO) – to secure stitches at the completion of the sock

The pattern is worked in the round using standard circular knitting methods, with markers placed to denote the beginning of round (BOR) and track pattern repeats. Yarn positioning instructions including with yarn in back (wyib) and with yarn in front (wyif) are incorporated to maintain proper tension and stitch appearance throughout the mosaic colorwork sections.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Interconnected Socks requires two contrasting colors of fingering weight yarn, each weighing 50 grams. The pattern accommodates both 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, providing flexibility for yarn selection. The example shown uses Lion Brand Sock Ease for the main color (MC), which provides 438 yards (401 meters) per 3.5 ounces (100 grams), offering ample yardage for the project. A contrasting color (CC) of equal yardage and weight completes the two-color mosaic design. Circular knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required to work the socks in the round, with a gauge of 38 stitches and 52 rows in the mosaic charted pattern equaling 4 inches (10 centimeters) when blocked.
