Product Description
The Interconnected Cowl is a soft, cozy, slipped stitch cowl knit in worsted weight cotton yarn, comfy for those with sensitive skin and in transitional weather. The bold motif uses only one color per row; some stitches are slipped to create upward movement of the alternate colored lines without stranding. This cowl reminds me of how we are all interconnected, though sometimes that connection is through another.

Interconnected Cowl by Stefanie Johnson
What Is Being Made
The Interconnected Cowl is a soft, cozy neck accessory designed as a statement piece. This knitted cowl features a bold slipped stitch motif that creates a visually striking pattern while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters. The design is offered in two sizes: a close-fitting cowl and an oversized cowl option, allowing knitters to choose their preferred fit and drape.
Design Concept
Stefanie Johnson created this cowl with symbolic intention. The slipped stitch motif is meant to represent how we are all interconnected, though sometimes that connection flows through another person. This conceptual depth transforms the cowl from a simple functional accessory into a wearable expression of interconnectedness.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Interconnected Cowl employs slipped stitch colorwork as its primary technique. This method allows for the creation of complex-looking patterns without the complexity of traditional stranded colorwork. Slipped stitches are worked in the round, creating a seamless tubular construction. The technique involves carrying yarn across stitches that are slipped rather than knitted, which produces the bold interconnected visual motif while keeping the knitting process straightforward for intermediate-level crafters.
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and fundamental stitches:
- k: knit stitch
- p: purl stitch
- s: slip stitch
- CO: cast on
- BO: bind off
- BOR: beginning of round
- m: marker (used to track the beginning of rounds in circular knitting)
- sts: stitches
The pattern is worked in the round using a slipped stitch chart, with a repeat unit measuring 16 stitches wide by 2.2 inches high in the slipped stitch pattern before blocking.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The gauge for the slipped stitch chart repeat is 16 stitches = 3.5 inches wide and 2.2 inches high before blocking. The cowl is available in two sizes with the following finished measurements:
- Close-Fitting Cowl: 9 inches × 22 inches (23 cm × 55.5 cm) pre-blocking; 9.5 inches × 22.5 inches (23 cm × 57 cm) after blocking
- Oversized Cowl: 9 inches × 25 inches (23 cm × 63.5 cm) pre-blocking; 9.5 inches × 26 inches (24 cm × 66 cm) after blocking
Materials and Yarn
The Interconnected Cowl requires worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors for the slipped stitch colorwork effect. The pattern calls for approximately 100 grams of yarn in the main color (MC) and 100 grams in a contrasting color (CC), totaling 200 grams of yarn for the project.
The cowl shown in the pattern photographs was knitted using Blue Sky Fibers Organic Cotton Worsted, a yarn composed of 100% certified organic cotton. This yarn provides 150 yards (137 meters) per 3.5 ounces (100 grams). The specific colors used in the sample are #622 Pumpkin for the main color and #614 Dr. (Doctor) for the contrasting color, creating a warm, earthy color combination that highlights the interconnected stitch pattern.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the slipped stitch colorwork creates a visually complex and striking appearance, the technique itself is manageable for knitters with foundational skills. The pattern requires comfort with circular knitting, reading charts, and managing two colors, but the straightforward nature of slipped stitches makes it an excellent project for advancing beyond beginner techniques without requiring the complexity of stranded colorwork.

The Interconnected Cowl is a knitting pattern available as a downloadable PDF, making it immediately accessible for digital reference while working on the project. This format allows knitters to view the
