Intarsia - Uri Moniker Chart Children's Sweater

What Is Being Made

This is a children's sweater featuring an intarsia design chart. The garment is constructed as a classic pullover-style jumper with a structured fit, including a shaped back and front with armhole shaping and ribbed edging details.

Craft and Primary Technique

This is a knitting project designed for knitters with intermediate skill level. The sweater employs intarsia colorwork technique, which involves knitting different colored yarn sections into the fabric to create a pictorial design. The intarsia method allows for large, bold pattern areas without the bulk that traditional stranded colorwork can create, making it ideal for children's garments where comfort and wearability are important.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

The sweater construction utilizes several fundamental knitting stitches:

  • Stockinette Stitch (st-st) – The primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a recognizable V-pattern texture on the right side
  • 2x2 Ribbing – A knit-purl pattern (K2, P2 repeat) used for the cuff edging and waistband sections, providing elasticity and a fitted finish
  • Decreases – Including p2tog (purl two together) decreases worked strategically for armhole shaping and garment fit
  • Thumb Method Cast-On – The specified cast-on technique for beginning the garment

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight, versatile yarn suitable for children's garments. The project requires two needle sizes:

  • 2¾mm needles – Used for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections, creating a tighter gauge for elastic edging
  • 3¼mm needles – Used for the main body worked in stockinette stitch, accommodating the slightly larger gauge needed for the sweater's primary fabric

The intarsia design requires multiple yarn colors as specified in the Uri Moniker Chart provided with the pattern. Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn and needle sizes.

Construction Details

The sweater is worked in pieces with the following structural elements:

  • Back piece – Cast on 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches depending on size, worked in 2x2 ribbing for 8 rows, then continued in stockinette stitch with the intarsia chart incorporated
  • Front piece – Worked similarly to the back with the intarsia design chart integrated into the stockinette stitch fabric
  • Armhole shaping – Decreases worked at each end of rows to create fitted armholes, with shaping continuing until armholes reach 10 [11:12:13:14]cm in length
  • Stitch holder placement – Stitches are held for later finishing, indicating a set-in sleeve construction or neckline finishing technique

Sizing and Customization

The pattern is provided in multiple sizes, indicated by the bracketed numbers throughout the instructions. This allows the sweater to be knitted for different ages and sizes of children, with proportional adjustments to stitch counts, row lengths, and finished measurements.
