Product Description
This is a chart inspired by the painting Starry Night. It is quite tricky to get the swirls to look right in such a small space but I love the final look.
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for Chunky sweater 28" to 54" and the chart. The chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. Check my Instarsia designer profile for all patterns and chart.
Update: All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Starry Night Chart Adults Sweater
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern features an intarsia sweater for adults showcasing a Starry Night chart design. The garment is worked in chunky yarn using intermediate-level knitting techniques, making it an engaging project for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore color work methods.
What Is Being Made
A pullover sweater designed for adults, featuring a decorative intarsia chart inspired by Starry Night imagery. The sweater is constructed using standard knitting methods with color changes integrated throughout the design using the intarsia technique.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs the intarsia technique, a color work method that allows knitters to create large, detailed pictorial designs within their knitting. The intarsia approach involves using separate balls of yarn for different colored sections of the design. To prevent holes from forming where colors meet, the yarns must be twisted around each other at color changes, linking the colors together seamlessly. This technique differs from stranded colorwork and is ideal for designs with larger blocks of color or intricate imagery like the Starry Night chart featured in this sweater.
Stitches Used
The pattern is primarily worked in stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which creates a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side. Stocking stitch is achieved by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side. The pattern also incorporates standard shaping techniques including increases and decreases for garment construction, with stitches held on stitch holders during assembly.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Chunky weight yarn in multiple colors as specified by the Starry Night chart (exact yardage amounts provided in the full pattern based on size)
- Needles: One pair of 6mm (UK size 4 / USA size 10) knitting needles for main fabric and one pair of 5mm (UK size 6 / USA size 8) knitting needles for ribbing
- Notions: 2 stitch holders for holding stitches during construction
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 14 stitches and 20 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using 6mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for proper garment fit. Knitters should check their tension swatch before beginning; if the swatch contains fewer stitches than specified, a thinner needle should be used, and if it contains more stitches, a thicker needle is required.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Instarsia, offering convenient access to detailed instructions and the Starry Night chart for color placement throughout the sweater.
