Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Sienna Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring intarsia colorwork design. The garment is constructed with a classic pullover silhouette, including a shaped back and front with armhole shaping, ribbed cuffs, and a fitted neckline. The pattern includes multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements, making it a versatile design for various ages.
Techniques Used
Intarsia Colorwork: The primary technique featured in this pattern is intarsia, which involves knitting with multiple colors to create a pictorial design. The "Sienna Moniker Chart" refers to a specific color pattern chart that knitters follow to incorporate the intarsia design into the sweater body. This technique allows for detailed, multi-colored motifs without the bulk that traditional stranding methods create.
Shaping Methods: The pattern employs several shaping techniques including armhole decreases worked at the beginning of rows, waist shaping through strategic decreasing, and neckline construction. Decreases are performed using standard knitting methods such as knit two together (k2tog) and purl two together (p2tog) to create clean, professional-looking decreases.
Ribbed Edgings: The sweater features 2x2 ribbing (alternating 2 knit stitches with 2 purl stitches) at the cuffs and lower body. This ribbing provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape during wear and washing.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, worked in flat rows to create a smooth, classic knit fabric
- 2x2 Ribbing: Used for cuff and waistband sections, alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2-2 pattern to create vertical lines and stretch
- Knit (k): Basic knit stitch used throughout
- Purl (p): Basic purl stitch, particularly in ribbing sections
- Knit Two Together (k2tog): Decrease stitch used for armhole and waist shaping
- Purl Two Together (p2tog): Decrease stitch used for shaping and stitch adjustments
- Back Stitch: Referenced for seaming pieces together
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a medium-light yarn suitable for creating garments with good stitch definition—particularly important for displaying intarsia colorwork clearly. The pattern specifies two needle sizes: 2¾mm needles for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections, and 3¼mm needles for the main body worked in stockinette stitch. This needle size progression allows the ribbing to be tighter and more elastic while the larger needles create the appropriate gauge for the sweater body.
The pattern is worked flat (back and forth in rows) rather than in the round, with pieces constructed separately and then seamed together using back stitch. Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension and using the recommended yarn weight, ensuring accurate sizing across all included size options.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern requires knitters to have solid foundational skills including cast-on methods (specifically the thumb method mentioned), basic stitches, decreasing techniques, and the ability to read and follow an intarsia chart. The combination of colorwork chart reading and shaping elements makes this suitable for knitters beyond the beginner level who are ready to tackle multi-color techniques.
