Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Sarah Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is an intarsia knitted children's sweater designed by Instarsia as a downloadable PDF pattern. The sweater features a charted intarsia design, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to incorporate colorwork techniques into a wearable garment. The pattern is graded across multiple sizes to accommodate different children's measurements.
Craft and Technique
This project uses the knitting craft with intarsia colorwork as the primary design method. Intarsia is a technique where separate colors are knitted into the fabric using individual bobbins or yarn lengths, creating a design that appears on the surface of the finished piece. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia does not carry yarn across the back of the work, resulting in a smoother, flatter fabric ideal for children's garments.
The pattern requires working from a chart provided in the PDF, which guides the placement of colors throughout the design. This charted approach allows knitters to follow the intarsia pattern row by row, switching colors as indicated to build the complete design.
Stitches and Construction
The sweater is constructed primarily in stockinette stitch (st-st), which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. The ribbed sections use 2x2 rib (alternating 2 knit stitches and 2 purl stitches), which provides elasticity and a finished appearance at the cuffs and hem.
Construction details include:
- Back and front pieces worked separately in stockinette stitch
- Ribbed edging (2x2 rib pattern) at the lower edge and cuffs for a fitted finish
- Armhole shaping achieved through decreases worked at the beginning of rows
- Stitch holders used to hold stitches during construction, particularly for neckline and shoulder areas
- Seaming techniques to join the finished pieces together
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that creates a refined, drapey fabric suitable for children's clothing. The pattern specifies 2¾mm needles for the main stockinette sections and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed edging. The use of different needle sizes is a standard technique to ensure the ribbed sections maintain proper elasticity while the main fabric has the correct gauge.
Yarn amounts are based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn weight are used, so selecting the correct yarn weight and maintaining consistent gauge throughout the project is essential for proper fit.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While stockinette stitch and ribbing are fundamental knitting techniques, the intarsia colorwork element adds complexity. Knitters should be comfortable reading charts, managing multiple yarn colors, and maintaining even tension across color changes. The pattern includes multiple size options, requiring attention to size-specific row counts and stitch numbers throughout construction.
Size Range
The pattern is graded across multiple children's sizes, with specific instructions for stitch counts and row lengths varying by size. For example, the initial cast-on remains consistent at 70 stitches for the back, but subsequent shaping rows include bracketed numbers indicating size-specific adjustments, such as [78:86:94:102] stitches after ribbing, accommodating different age ranges and measurements.
