Intarsia - Luna Moniker Chart Children's Sweater

What is Being Made

This is a children's sweater pattern featuring intarsia colorwork design with a personalized moniker chart. The garment is constructed as a classic pullover with a fitted silhouette, including shaped armholes and ribbed cuffs and hem for a polished finish.

Craft and Primary Technique

This is a knitting project designed for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern incorporates intarsia colorwork, a technique where different colored yarns are used to create a pictorial or textual design within the knitted fabric. The intarsia method allows for large blocks of color and detailed imagery, making it ideal for personalized moniker charts where a child's name or initials can be prominently featured in the sweater design.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with a V appearance on the right side
  • 2x2 Ribbing (2x2 rib): A knit-purl combination (K2, P2 repeat) used for the cuffs, hem, and neckline ribbing to provide elasticity and structure
  • Decreases: The pattern uses purl two together (p2tog) decreases for shaping armholes and other fitted areas

Construction Details

The sweater is worked in pieces, with separate Back and Front panels that are later seamed together. The Back piece is cast on with 70 stitches and worked in 2x2 ribbing for the lower edge before transitioning to stockinette stitch for the main body. The Front follows a similar construction method. Armhole shaping is achieved through strategic decreases worked at the beginning of rows, creating a fitted sleeve cap. The pattern includes multiple size options with stitch counts and row lengths provided in brackets, allowing for customization across different children's sizes.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yarn that creates a refined, durable fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires two sizes of needles: 2¾mm needles for the ribbed edgings and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch sections. The use of different needle sizes allows the ribbing to be tighter and more elastic than the body, a standard technique in sweater construction. Specific yarn yardage amounts are provided based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn weight and needle sizes.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches, shaping techniques, and reading pattern instructions. The intarsia colorwork element requires additional skill in managing multiple yarn colors and maintaining even tension across color changes, making it suitable for knitters ready to advance beyond simple stockinette projects.
