Intarsia - Ella Moniker Chart Children's Sweater

What is Being Made

This is a children's sweater featuring an intarsia chart design element, specifically the "Ella Moniker" personalization chart. The garment is constructed as a classic pullover-style jumper with front and back panels, set-in armholes, and ribbed cuffs and waistband. The design allows for customization through the intarsia moniker chart, making it a personalized piece for a child.

Garment Construction and Shaping

The sweater is worked in pieces, beginning with the back panel. The pattern provides multiple size options with staggered row counts and stitch counts to accommodate different ages and sizes. The back is cast on using 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches depending on size selection, then worked in stockinette stitch for the main body. Armhole shaping is created by decreasing one stitch at each end of every row over 4 to 6 rows, depending on size, reducing the stitch count to 55 [63:67:75:79] stitches at the armhole.

The front panel follows the same armhole shaping as the back, with the intarsia moniker chart integrated into the front design. The front includes specific stitch placement instructions, with the chart stitches worked into the center section while maintaining stockinette stitch in surrounding areas. The pattern specifies exact row counts for different sizes before armhole shaping begins, ranging from 10 to 52 rows depending on the chosen size.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for an intermediate-level knitter:

  • Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used throughout the main body of both front and back panels, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side.
  • 2x2 Ribbing: Used for the cuff and waistband ribbing, created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2-knit, 2-purl pattern. This elastic ribbing helps the sweater fit snugly at the wrists and hem.
  • Intarsia Colorwork: The Ella Moniker chart is worked using the intarsia technique, which involves using separate yarn lengths or bobbins for different colored sections to create a personalized design element on the front of the sweater.
  • Decreasing: The pattern uses purl two together (p2tog) decreases to shape the armholes and create fitted sleeves. Decreases are worked at the beginning and end of rows to taper the garment.
  • Stitch Holders: Remaining stitches are placed on stitch holders during construction, allowing for later finishing of necklines and other details.

Materials and Needles

This sweater is designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight worsted or DK-weight yarn that creates a refined, drapey fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern calls for two needle sizes: 2¾mm needles for the ribbed sections (cuffs and waistband) and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch body. The use of smaller needles for ribbing creates a tighter gauge that provides elasticity, while the slightly larger needles for the body create a more relaxed, comfortable fabric for the main sweater sections.

Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight. The intarsia chart requires additional yarn colors for the personalized moniker design, with separate bobbins or yarn lengths needed for each color section to prevent long floats across the back of the work.

Pattern Format and Difficulty

This is a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Instarsia. The intermediate difficulty level reflects the combination of basic shaping techniques with the added complexity of reading and executing an intarsia colorwork chart. Knitters should be comfortable with basic shaping, gauge adjustment, and following multi-size instructions before attempting this project.
