This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Chris Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level knitted children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The pattern uses the Chris Moniker Chart for creating a detailed picture or motif across the front of the garment. Intarsia knitting is a technique where different colored yarns are used to create a large, multi-colored design element, making this sweater a striking statement piece for children.
What Is Being Made
A children's pullover sweater with set-in armholes and a crew neckline. The sweater is constructed with separate back and front pieces, plus sleeves and neckband finishing. The intarsia chart is worked into the front piece, while the back remains in solid stockinette stitch. Multiple size options are provided within the pattern to accommodate different children's measurements.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st) – The primary fabric throughout the sweater, creating a smooth, flat surface ideal for showcasing the intarsia design
- 2x2 Ribbing – Used for the cuffs, waistband, and neckband to provide elasticity and a finished appearance
- Intarsia Colorwork – A technique where separate yarn colors are used for different sections of the design; colors are twisted together at color changes to prevent holes, and bobbins or yarn cards are typically used to manage multiple colors
- Armhole Shaping – Decreases worked at the beginning of rows to create fitted armholes
- Thumb Method Cast-On – Used to establish the initial stitches for the garment
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
- K (Knit) – Fundamental knit stitch
- P (Purl) – Fundamental purl stitch
- P2tog (Purl Two Together) – A decrease stitch that combines two purl stitches into one
- 2x2 Rib Pattern – Alternating knit and purl stitches in a two-stitch repeat, worked over two rows to create vertical columns
- St-st (Stockinette Stitch) – Alternating rows of knit and purl stitches, creating the classic smooth knit fabric
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a lightweight, versatile yarn suitable for children's garments. The pattern specifies exact yardage requirements based on size, though these amounts assume the recommended tension is maintained and the specified yarn weight is used.
Needles Required:
- 2¾mm (US 2) needles – Used for the ribbed sections (cuffs, waistband, and neckband)
- 3¼mm (US 3) needles – Used for the main stockinette stitch body and intarsia colorwork
The pattern includes multiple size options with stitch counts and row counts provided in brackets for each size, allowing the sweater to be customized for different children's measurements. Tension and gauge are critical when working intarsia, as maintaining consistent tension ensures the colorwork design appears correctly proportioned and the garment fits as intended.
Pattern Construction Details
The sweater begins with a cast-on of 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches for the back piece, depending on size. The lower edge is worked in 2x2 ribbing for 7 rows after the initial ribbed setup, providing a stretchy, finished edge. The body is then worked in stockinette stitch for the specified number of rows before armhole shaping begins. The front piece follows a similar construction but incorporates the intarsia chart during the stockinette stitch section. Armhole decreases are worked at both ends of rows to create the fitted sleeve cap area. The pattern provides specific row counts for each size variation, ensuring proper proportions throughout.
