Intarsia Chart Failure Chart Adults Sweater

What is Being Made

This is a downloadable knitting pattern for an adult sweater designed by Instarsia. The garment features intarsia colorwork, a technique that allows for complex, multi-colored designs to be incorporated into the knitted fabric. This sweater pattern is suitable for knitters with intermediate-level skills and uses chunky weight yarn for a substantial, cozy finished garment.

Intarsia Technique Explanation

Intarsia is an advanced colorwork method in knitting that differs from stranded colorwork techniques. Rather than carrying multiple yarn colors across the back of the work, intarsia uses separate balls or bobbins of yarn for each distinct color section. This approach eliminates the bulk created by floats and produces a single-layer fabric with clean color transitions.

The key to successful intarsia work is twisting colors together at color changes. When transitioning from one color to the next, the new color should be twisted around the previous color to link them together. This critical step prevents holes from forming at the junctions between different colored sections, ensuring a professional appearance and structural integrity in the finished sweater.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) – The fundamental stitch creating the primary fabric texture
  • Purl (p) – Used in combination with knit stitches
  • Stocking stitch – The primary stitch pattern, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, V-textured fabric
  • Make one stitch (m1) – An increase technique created by picking up the loop between the last stitch and the next stitch, then working into the back of this loop to add a new stitch without visible holes
  • Decrease stitches – Used for shaping the sweater
  • Increases – Used for shaping and construction

Materials Required

This pattern requires chunky weight yarn in multiple colors to execute the intarsia design shown on the chart. Specific yardage amounts are provided in the pattern based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn type are used.

Needles: Two pairs of knitting needles are required. The primary needles are 6mm (UK size 4 / USA size 10) for working the main fabric at the correct tension. A second pair of 5mm (UK size 6 / USA size 8) needles is used for ribbing or other sections requiring a tighter gauge.

Additional notions: 2 stitch holders are needed to hold stitches temporarily during construction, typically for armholes, neckline, or shoulder shaping.

Tension and Gauge

Achieving correct tension is essential for this project. The pattern specifies 14 stitches and 20 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch on 6mm needles. Before beginning the sweater, knitters should work a tension swatch and measure carefully. If your swatch contains fewer stitches than specified, switch to a thinner needle; if it contains more stitches, use a thicker needle. Correct tension ensures the finished sweater will match the intended dimensions and drape properly.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The pattern includes standard knitting abbreviations and detailed instructions for executing the intarsia colorwork technique successfully.
