Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Charlotte Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring an intarsia design element, specifically a personalized moniker chart that allows customization with the wearer's initials or name. The garment is constructed as a classic pullover sweater with a structured fit, including shaped armholes and ribbed edging for a polished finish.
Difficulty Level and Craft Technique
This is an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to incorporate color work techniques. The pattern requires understanding of intarsia knitting, which is a method of working with multiple colors by using separate yarn lengths for each color block rather than stranding yarn across the back of the work. This technique creates a flat, professional appearance ideal for personalized designs like name charts.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The sweater employs several key stitches and techniques:
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st) forms the main fabric throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance
- 2x2 Ribbing is used for the cuff and waistband sections, providing elasticity and a neat, fitted edge. The ribbing is worked by alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2x2 pattern across 7 rows
- Decreases are strategically placed to shape the armholes, with single stitch decreases worked at each end of rows to create a fitted sleeve cap
- Purl Decreases (p2tog) are incorporated into the pattern, particularly in shaping rows, to maintain stitch definition
- Intarsia Color Work is integrated into the front panel using the provided Charlotte Moniker Chart, allowing personalization while maintaining the integrity of the stockinette stitch fabric
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which produces a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern specifies two needle sizes:
- 2¾mm needles are used for the ribbed sections (cuffs and waistband), creating a tighter gauge that provides elasticity
- 3¼mm needles are used for the main stockinette stitch body, working at a slightly larger gauge to create the primary fabric
Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn weight and needle sizes. The intarsia technique requires separate yarn lengths in the chart colors, which are worked into the front panel design as indicated by the Charlotte Moniker Chart.
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern is provided in multiple sizes with staggered measurements indicated in brackets throughout the instructions. The sweater begins with a cast-on of 70 stitches and includes multiple size options with corresponding stitch counts ranging from 78 to 102 stitches depending on the desired finished size. Row counts vary by size, with longer pieces required for larger sizes to maintain proper proportions.
Key Shaping Details
The pattern includes armhole shaping worked over multiple rows with decreases at each end, creating a fitted sleeve cap. The front panel incorporates the intarsia moniker chart while maintaining the same shaping as the back. Stitches are placed on holders during construction, allowing for seamless finishing and proper stitch alignment when joining pieces.
