Intarsia Cathy Moniker Chart Children's Sweater

Project Overview

This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The pattern is designed by an independent designer and uses 4-ply yarn weight, making it suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The sweater is constructed using classic knitting techniques with shaping for a fitted garment.

What is Being Made

A children's pullover sweater with intarsia colorwork detailing. The garment includes a back piece, front piece with the intarsia chart design, and sleeves. The pattern provides multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements. The sweater features ribbed edges and armhole shaping for a professional finish.

Construction and Techniques

Ribbing: The sweater begins with a 2x2 rib pattern (knit 2, purl 2 repeat) worked over 7 rows after the initial cast-on. This ribbing provides elasticity at the lower edge and helps the garment maintain its shape.

Intarsia Colorwork: The front piece incorporates intarsia technique using the Cathy Moniker chart provided in the pattern. Intarsia involves working with separate lengths of yarn for different colored sections, creating a seamless color design on the fabric surface. This technique is ideal for large, distinct areas of color and produces a smooth, professional appearance without the bulk of stranded colorwork.

Armhole Shaping: The pattern includes structured armhole shaping with decreases worked at the beginning of rows over multiple consecutive rows. This creates properly fitted armholes that sit correctly on the child's shoulders.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary fabric throughout the sweater body and sleeves, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side
  • 2x2 Rib: A reversible elastic stitch pattern used for cuffs and edges, alternating 2 knit stitches with 2 purl stitches
  • Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A left-leaning decrease used for shaping armholes and other decreases
  • Knit Stitches: Standard knit stitches form the foundation of the stockinette stitch fabric

Materials and Tools

Yarn: 4-ply yarn weight is specified for this pattern. The pattern notes that yarn amounts are based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn weight are used, so selecting the correct yarn weight is important for proper garment sizing and fit.

Needles: The pattern uses two needle sizes. Smaller 2¾mm needles are used for the ribbed sections at the cuffs and edges, while larger 3¼mm needles are used for the main stockinette stitch sections. This needle size variation is a standard technique that allows ribbing to be worked at a tighter gauge, creating a more elastic and refined edge.

Additional Tools: A stitch holder is required to hold stitches temporarily during construction, particularly when shaping the neckline on the front piece.

Pattern Details and Sizing

The pattern provides multiple size options, indicated by bracketed numbers throughout the instructions (for example, [25:29:29:33] represents different stitch counts for different sizes). The back piece begins with a cast-on of 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches depending on the chosen size. Various row counts are specified for different sections, allowing the sweater to be customized for the intended child's measurements.

The armhole depth is designed to measure 10 [11:12:13:14]cm (approximately 4 to 5½ inches) depending on size, ensuring proper proportions across the different garment sizes.
