Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Becca Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level knitted children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The pattern provides instructions for creating a classic pullover garment with ribbed cuffs and waistband, sized to fit multiple age ranges. The design incorporates the Becca moniker chart as the focal intarsia element, allowing crafters to personalize the sweater with custom lettering or monogram details.
What Is Being Made
A children's pullover sweater constructed in pieces (back, front, and sleeves) that are subsequently seamed together. The garment features a crew neckline, set-in sleeves, and a fitted silhouette with shaping at the armholes and waist. The intarsia chart allows for custom monogram or name integration into the front design, making each sweater uniquely personalized.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia Colorwork: The primary decorative technique, using the Becca moniker chart to incorporate contrasting colors into the knit fabric. Intarsia involves working with separate yarn lengths for different colored sections, twisting yarns at color changes to prevent holes and maintain fabric integrity.
- Ribbed Edgings: 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2 alternating) creates stretchy, fitted edges at the cuffs, waistband, and neckline.
- Armhole Shaping: Decreases worked at each end of rows to create fitted sleeve caps and proper garment structure.
- Seaming: Finished pieces are joined using backstitch or similar seaming techniques for a professional finish.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The main fabric stitch throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit surface ideal for displaying intarsia colorwork.
- 2x2 Ribbing: Knit 2, purl 2 ribbing worked over multiple rows to create elastic edges that hug the body at wrists, waist, and neckline.
- Knit and Purl Stitches: Foundation stitches used to construct all pattern elements.
- Decreases: Pattern-specified decreases (such as p2tog—purl 2 together) for shaping armholes and achieving proper fit.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yarn suitable for children's garments that provides good stitch definition for intarsia work. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main fabric and 3¼mm needles for ribbed sections, with needle size adjustments ensuring proper tension and fabric drape. Specific yarn yardage amounts are provided based on size and should be calculated according to the tension specified in the full pattern instructions. The intarsia technique requires additional yarn in contrasting colors for the moniker chart design.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have solid foundational skills including cast-on methods, basic stitch work, and seaming. The intarsia colorwork technique adds complexity beyond basic knitting, requiring careful attention to color changes and yarn management to achieve a polished, professional result. Crafters should be comfortable reading charts and managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously.
