Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Ashley Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted pullover garment with a moniker chart, allowing personalization through custom name integration into the design. The sweater is suitable for intermediate knitters and comes in multiple sizes to accommodate different children's measurements.
Intarsia Technique
Intarsia is an advanced color work method in knitting that allows for the creation of large, detailed motifs and personalized designs without carrying yarn across the back of the work. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia uses separate lengths of yarn for each color section, resulting in a flat, single-layer fabric. This technique is particularly effective for incorporating names, initials, or complex pictorial designs—such as the Ashley moniker chart featured in this pattern—while maintaining clean, professional-looking results on both the front and back of the garment.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the main body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with a V-shaped pattern on the right side
- 2x2 Ribbing: Used for the cuff and waistband sections, providing elasticity and a finished edge that hugs the body
- Knit (K) and Purl (P): Fundamental stitches that form the basis of the ribbed and stockinette sections
- Purl Two Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the armholes and create fitted shaping throughout the garment
Construction and Shaping
The sweater is constructed in pieces—a back, front, and sleeves—which are later seamed together. The pattern includes detailed shaping instructions for armholes, with decreases worked at regular intervals to create a tailored fit. Multiple size options are provided with stitch counts and row measurements specified in brackets, allowing the pattern to accommodate various children's sizes. The intarsia moniker chart is worked into the front piece during the stockinette stitch sections, with specific row counts provided for when to begin and end the personalized design element.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern calls for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yet durable yarn weight suitable for creating well-defined stitch definition and precise intarsia work. The specific yarn amounts are based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn type are used, so yarn yardage will vary depending on the selected size.
Two needle sizes are required for this project:
- 2¾mm needles: Used for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections, allowing for a tighter gauge that provides elasticity
- 3¼mm needles: Used for the main stockinette stitch body, creating the proper tension and fabric drape for the sweater
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, reflecting the complexity of working intarsia colorwork while simultaneously managing garment shaping, multiple size options, and seaming. Knitters should be comfortable with basic shaping techniques, tension consistency, and the intarsia method before attempting this project.
