Product Description

The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!

This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.

Intarsia - Ada Moniker Chart Children's Sweater

What is Being Made

This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The garment features a charted moniker or personalized name element integrated into the fabric, making it a customizable piece suitable for young wearers. The pattern includes shaping for a fitted sweater with distinct front and back pieces.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is a knitting pattern classified at intermediate difficulty level. The primary construction method is intarsia knitting, a technique that allows knitters to incorporate multiple colors or personalized designs (in this case, a moniker chart) directly into the fabric. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia uses separate lengths of yarn for each color section, creating a smooth, single-layer fabric without floats on the reverse side. This technique is particularly suitable for children's garments where comfort and minimal bulk are important.

Stitches and Construction Details

The sweater employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Stockinette stitch (st-st): Used throughout the main body of the sweater for a smooth, classic fabric
  • 2x2 ribbing: Applied at the cuffs and waistband for elasticity and a fitted finish. The ribbing is worked over 2 knit stitches alternating with 2 purl stitches, then continued for additional rows to create a secure edge
  • Decreasing techniques: The pattern includes strategic decreases such as p2tog (purl two together) to shape the garment, particularly at the armholes and along the sides
  • Stitch holder placement: Stitches are placed on holders during construction, allowing for later finishing of necklines and other details

Pattern Structure and Sizing

The pattern is provided in multiple sizes for children, with measurements given in both centimeters and inches. The sweater includes:

  • A back piece cast on with 70 stitches, worked in stockinette stitch with ribbed edging
  • A front piece that incorporates the intarsia moniker chart within the main fabric
  • Armhole shaping achieved through decreases worked at regular intervals over multiple rows
  • Detailed row counts for each size variation, allowing knitters to work the appropriate length for proper fit

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which produces a lightweight, durable fabric ideal for children's wear. The pattern specifies the use of 2¾mm needles for the main stockinette sections and 3¼mm needles for ribbed edging, allowing the knitter to adjust tension and create a more elastic cuff and waistband. Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight, ensuring proper fit across all size options. For the intarsia moniker chart, knitters will require separate yarn colors as indicated in the chart itself.

Design Format

This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for digital viewing and printing. The format allows knitters to reference the pattern while working and to scale or print sections as needed for chart reading during intarsia work.
