Product Description

Inblue is a classic top-down triangular shawl. The knitting starts at the centre of the the shawl’s top edge with the garter tab cast-on. The centerline increases are made in a simple eyelet pattern to create a soft and delicate line between two wings. The shawl is finished with the border in a chevron lace pattern.

The shawl is knit in a light fingering weight yarn using two colours, where the dark blue used as the main colour, and the light blue is used for the two-colour eyelet sections and the lace border. For the two-colour sections you would need to join in the contrast yarn at the beginning and break it at the end of each section.

Inblue Triangular Shawl by Alla Saenko

What is Being Made

Inblue is a classic top-down triangular shawl designed by Alla Saenko for Island Knit Design. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a sophisticated accessory featuring a two-colour colourwork design that combines dark blue as the primary colour with light blue accents throughout the piece.

Construction Method

The shawl employs a top-down triangular construction technique, beginning at the centre of the shawl's top edge. The pattern uses a garter tab cast-on to establish the foundation, which is a traditional method for starting shawls that creates a neat, finished edge at the top of the garment. From this central starting point, the shawl expands outward and downward to create the characteristic triangular silhouette.

Stitch Techniques and Patterns

Inblue incorporates several key stitch techniques to create visual interest and texture:

  • Centerline Increases: Simple eyelet pattern increases are used along the centerline, creating a soft and delicate vertical line that runs between the two wings of the shawl
  • Two-Colour Eyelet Sections: Light blue contrast yarn is introduced for eyelet sections, requiring the knitter to join in the contrast colour at the beginning of each section and break it at the end
  • Chevron Lace Border: The shawl is finished with a chevron lace pattern border that frames the entire piece with an elegant, geometric design

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Inblue is designed to be knit in light fingering weight yarn (4-ply), which is a fine yarn weight that creates delicate, intricate stitch definition. The pattern requires two colours: dark blue serves as the main colour throughout the majority of the shawl, while light blue is used strategically for the two-colour eyelet sections and the lace border. The use of fingering weight yarn combined with the eyelet and lace techniques creates an airy, elegant finished fabric suitable for a sophisticated shawl.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with stitch patterns, increases, and two-colour knitting techniques. The combination of eyelet patterns, lace borders, and colour changes requires attention to detail and familiarity with reading knitting instructions.

Pattern Format

Inblue is available as a downloadable PDF pattern from Island Knit Design by Alla Saenko, version 01 from July 2021. This format allows knitters to access the complete instructions, finished measurements, and all necessary pattern details for their personal use.
