Product Description
In the Groove Crochet Fingerless Gloves
These lightweight crochet fingerless gloves are perfect for “in-between” seasons. This free pattern features a ridged stitch pattern with a classic look and feel - your fingerless gloves will always be in style :-)
Glove Sizing & Fit
This crochet pattern is written for 3 sizes - S, M and L, designed to fit a teen/adult hand. These gloves are designed to be quite fitted. The pattern PDF includes step-by-step photos of the glove construction.
Hook size: The ribbing at the top and bottom of each glove is worked using slip stitches. It is very important that you maintain a loose tension when working these slip stitches. If they are worked too tightly, your glove will be too tight! If you tend to crochet tightly, you may wish to use a larger hook for the slip stitch rows.
Note: This pattern is available for free on my blog - nedandmimi. The print-friendly, ad-free PDF is available to download here, and is perfect for printing or viewing on a tablet :-)
In the Groove Fingerless Gloves Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
The In the Groove Fingerless Gloves are a crochet accessory designed by Sarah Ruane. These gloves feature an open-finger design, making them ideal for activities requiring hand dexterity while maintaining warmth. The pattern includes finished measurements for three sizes: Small (to fit 7" hand circumference with 6" glove length), Medium (7.5" hand circumference with 6" glove length), and Large (8" hand circumference with 7" glove length). Hand circumference is measured across the palm, excluding the thumb.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental techniques to create the fingerless glove structure. The pattern utilizes alternating rows of half double crochet and slip stitch as the primary construction method, which creates textural interest and contributes to the finished fabric's drape and elasticity. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases, with the pattern incorporating half double crochet 2 together (hdc2tog) as a decrease technique. The ribbing sections of the gloves can be worked with either a 4mm crochet hook or an optional 4.5mm hook, allowing crafters to adjust tension and fabric density as needed.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – foundational stitch for starting the project
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – primary stitch creating the main fabric texture
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – used in alternating rows with hdc for visual and structural variation
- Half Double Crochet 2 Together (hdc2tog) – decrease stitch for shaping the glove to fit the hand
Materials and Tools
The In the Groove Fingerless Gloves are worked with DK weight yarn (also classified as #3/Lightweight yarn), providing a lightweight fabric suitable for fingerless gloves. A 4mm (US G-6) crochet hook is required to meet the specified gauge of 18 stitches by 18 rows over a 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) swatch measured over alternating rows of hdc and slip stitch. An optional 4.5mm (US-7) crochet hook is available for crafters who prefer to work the ribbing sections with slightly looser tension. Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and two stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.
Pattern Abbreviations Reference
The pattern uses standard US crochet terminology with the following abbreviations: ch (chain), st (stitch), sp (space), hdc (half double crochet), sl st (slip stitch), DEC (decrease), INC (increase), hdc2tog (half double crochet 2 together), rem (remaining), RS (right side), WS (wrong side), blo (back loop only), and flo (front loop only). Understanding these abbreviations is essential for following the pattern instructions accurately.
