Product Description

The In the Fast Lane Cowl is worked one color at a time. Slipped stitches are used to create woven garter stitch stripes on a stockinette stitch background. The solid background can be paired with a single or multiple contrast colors.  Each stripe uses under 8 yards, making it a perfect project for leftover odds and ends. The pattern is written for sport-weight yarn but can also be worked in worsted weight or DK yarn. The cowl can be folded along the center ridge to convert it to a narrow accessory with less drape. Yarn: Sport Weight or DK Yarn, Main Color: 125 yards (114.3 m) Contrast Color:  45 yards (41.2 m)

Project Overview

The In the Fast Lane Cowl is an advanced knitting project designed to create a sophisticated striped cowl using a combination of stockinette stitch and woven garter stitch techniques. This pattern is ideal for knitters looking to explore color work and slip stitch techniques while using up leftover yarn from other projects.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a finished cowl measuring 7.25 inches (18.4 cm) in height and 24.5 inches (62.2 cm) in circumference. The cowl is a versatile neckwear piece that can be worn as a single-loop cowl or doubled for extra warmth and visual impact.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Slip Stitch Color Work: Slipped stitches are worked purlwise to create woven garter stitch stripes that sit on top of a stockinette stitch background, producing a textured, dimensional striping effect
  • In-the-Round Knitting: The entire cowl is worked circularly, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a seamless, professional finish
  • Color Transitions: When changing colors, the new color is picked up behind the old color to maintain clean color changes and prevent loose floats
  • Monochromatic Striping: Each stripe is worked in a single color at a time, allowing for easy color changes and the flexibility to use multiple contrast colors or a single coordinating shade

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Stockinette Stitch: Forms the primary background fabric, creating a smooth, classic knit base
  • Garter Stitch Stripes: Created through strategic use of slipped stitches, these stripes add texture and visual interest to the stockinette foundation
  • Slip Stitches: Worked purlwise to create the woven effect within the garter stitch stripe sections

Yarn and Materials

The pattern is written for sport-weight yarn but offers flexibility for knitters who prefer to work with worsted weight or DK yarn instead. The sample shown uses Classic Elite Yarns Fresco, a premium blend consisting of 60% wool, 30% baby alpaca, and 10% angora.

  • Main Color Yardage: 125 yards (114.3 m) of sport-weight yarn
  • Contrast Color Yardage: 45 yards (41.2 m) per stripe, with each stripe requiring under 8 yards of yarn
  • Total Yardage: Approximately 164 yards (150 m) per 1.75 ounces (50 g)

Needles and Gauge

Knitters should use needles appropriate for sport-weight yarn and their preferred cast-on method. The pattern notes that a German Twisted Cast-on was used on the sample, though any preferred cast-on technique may be substituted. The gauge is 19 stitches across the specified row length, though achieving exact gauge is noted as not critical for this project, making it more forgiving for knitters working with yarn substitutions.

Project Benefits

With each contrast color stripe using under 8 yards of yarn, the In the Fast Lane Cowl is an excellent pattern for utilizing leftover yarn scraps from other projects. The advanced difficulty level rewards experienced knitters with a sophisticated final product that showcases both color work and texture techniques.
