What is Being Made

In Quiet is a beginner-friendly knitted wrap shawl designed by independent designer Alicia Plummer. This project creates a versatile wrap measuring 30 inches (75 cm) per panel with a finished folded width of 26 inches (66 cm) at the seamed point. The wrap is constructed in two separate pieces that are then seamed together, though the pattern notes it can be adapted to be worked in one continuous piece if desired.

Knitting Techniques

The wrap employs a two-piece construction method, with the designer recommending seaming for the integrity and stability it provides to the finished fabric. The pattern includes steam blocking as a preparation step prior to seaming the pieces together. Pieces are positioned with right sides facing outward and ribbing at the bottom (closest to the body) during assembly. This structured approach to construction makes the project accessible to beginners while ensuring a professional finish.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is Stockinette Stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric base. The wrap also features the Alternate Dot Stitch, a textured pattern worked over four rows:

• Row 3: *purl 1, knit 1* to end
• Row 4: Purl to end

This stitch combination creates visual interest while remaining manageable for beginner-level knitters.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Swan's Island Pure Blends Bulky weight yarn in the Seasmoke colorway; 4 skeins totaling 520 yards.

Needles: US size 11 (8.0 mm) circular needles in 40-inch length for the main fabric, with US size 9 (5.5 mm) circular needles also listed (or size needed to achieve gauge).

Additional Tools: Place markers (4 required) and a darning needle for weaving in ends and seaming the two pieces together.

Gauge: 13 stitches and 16 rows over a 4-inch (10 cm) square in Stockinette Stitch.
