Product Description
This blanket design is in honor of my grandmother, Ida Mathis Fisher. She taught me to crochet as a child. She loved making blankets and gave them to her many family members. I created this design by taking some of her favorite stitches and putting them together as a sampler. Each section represents an afghan/blanket that she made.
It comes in 2 sizes: Baby Blanket and Throw. There are 2 files included, one for each size.
There is a kit available on my website, here.
Ida's Sampler Blanket by Shelly Diaz
Project Overview
Ida's Sampler Blanket is a crochet baby blanket designed by Shelly Diaz as a tribute to her grandmother, Ida Mathis Fisher, who taught her to crochet and loved making blankets for family members. This sampler-style blanket combines several of Ida's favorite crochet stitches, with each section representing a different afghan or blanket that she created. The finished baby blanket measures approximately 36" x 36" when blocked.
Craft and Techniques
This project is created using crochet techniques and is rated at an Advanced Beginner/Intermediate difficulty level. The blanket showcases a sampler approach, meaning it features multiple distinct stitch patterns and techniques arranged in sections throughout the design. This structure allows crafters to practice and display various crochet stitches within a single cohesive project. The sampler format makes it an excellent choice for those looking to expand their stitch repertoire while creating a meaningful heirloom piece.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern incorporates Daisy Stitch as a featured element, along with several other traditional crochet stitches that were favorites of the blanket's namesake. Each section of the sampler uses different stitch patterns, creating visual interest and texture variation throughout the blanket. A consistent border stitch is used between sections and around the final perimeter to frame each sampler block and unify the overall design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Ida's Sampler Blanket requires approximately 1800 yards of DK weight yarn in a multi-color palette. The pattern is designed using Daisy Stitch Co Fibers DK yarn, which is a superwash merino and nylon blend (75/25 composition) that offers durability and easy care—ideal for a baby blanket. Each skein provides 245 yards at 3.5 ounces (100 grams).
The yarn is divided into five colors as follows:
- Color A: 245 yards (used for borders between sections and the final border)
- Color B: 490 yards
- Color C: 350 yards
- Color D: 245 yards
- Color E: 490 yards
These yardage amounts are approximate and may vary slightly depending on individual tension and gauge. The pattern features multiple color palettes, including a Sea Glass option and a Blackberry option, allowing crafters to customize the blanket's appearance while maintaining the same stitch structure and construction method.
Tools and Additional Materials
While specific hook size information is not detailed in the provided content, DK weight yarn typically pairs well with crochet hooks in the size range of H/8 (5mm) to I/9 (5.5mm). Crafters should refer to the complete pattern for exact hook recommendations and any additional materials needed, such as stitch markers or blocking supplies for achieving the finished 36" x 36" measurement.
