Product Description
Frigid air that makes your breath “smoke,” icicles hanging from rooftops, frosty trees – these call to mind the deep icy blue color of winter. This versatile cowl is a great unisex design that will keep you warm and comfortable.
The pattern is written for one size that results in a cowl 34” (86 cm) circumference x 8.5” (21.5 cm) height, however there are instructions with the number of repeats to make it larger or smaller.
The sample was made in Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd's Wool yarn, which is made of 100% Merino and each skein contains 250 yards (229 m) / 113 g). Any light worsted weight wool yarn should work, however you will need at least 250 yards.
Icy Textures Cowl by Carmen Nuland
What is Being Made
The Icy Textures Cowl is a versatile, unisex knitted cowl designed by Carmen Nuland. This circular neckwear piece features a finished circumference of 34" (86 cm) and a height of 8.5" (21.5 cm) in its standard size. The cowl's deep icy blue colorway evokes the visual imagery of winter—frigid air, hanging icicles, and frosty trees—making it both a functional and seasonally inspired accessory. The design is suitable for keeping the wearer warm and comfortable during cold weather.
Sizing and Customization
While the pattern is written for one standard size, it offers flexibility for adjustments. Knitters can modify the cowl's circumference by casting on any multiple of 28 stitches. For example, casting on 112 stitches produces a cowl approximately 23" (58.5 cm) in circumference, while 224 stitches yields approximately 45" (114 cm) in circumference. This adaptability makes the pattern accessible to a wide range of head sizes and fit preferences.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Icy Textures Cowl is constructed using textured stitch patterns worked in the round on circular needles. The pattern features a repeating textured motif that creates visual interest and depth. Knitters will work in rounds using a combination of knit and purl stitches to build the textured surface. The pattern requires basic knitting skills, making it appropriate for beginners who are comfortable with circular needle techniques and reading stitch patterns.
Yarn and Needles
This pattern calls for Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd's Wool Worsted, a 100% Merino yarn available in the Lt turquoise colorway. One skein of 250 yards (229 m) / 113 g is required to complete the standard-sized cowl. Knitters will use US 6 (4.0 mm) circular needles measuring 16" (40.5 cm), or a size adjusted to obtain the correct gauge. The pattern also requires a yarn needle for weaving in ends and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 27 rows over 4" (10 cm) in the textured pattern after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and drape. Blocking the completed cowl helps even out the textured stitches and ensures consistent sizing.
