Product Description
These fingerless mitts were designed to allow me to knit during my kids’ hockey practice without freezing my hands off in the cold arenas. Inspired by the marks on the ice created during ice dancing or even hockey.
The mitts are knit from the top to the cuff, and the thumb is knit afterwards in the opposite direction. There are no fingers at all to allow the knitter to hold the yarn between the fingers for tension control.
Seven Fingerless Mittens I have recently become addicted to knitting fingerless mittens, because they are such a wonderful garment for exploring textures and colours - small enough to take anywhere, and the finished object can be worn and admired easily (unlike socks, which tend to hide in shoes).
All the fingerless mittens/gloves are knit with fingering weight yarn. Unless otherwise specified, semi-solid and solid colours will yield the best result. Highly variegated yarns tend to obscure the pattern.

Ice Dancing Fingerless Mitts by Anna Dalvi
Project Overview
Ice Dancing fingerless mitts are a practical knitting accessory designed to keep hands warm while maintaining full finger dexterity. These mitts were created by designer Anna Dalvi to enable knitting during cold environments, such as indoor ice hockey arenas, without sacrificing the ability to hold yarn for tension control. The design draws inspiration from the visual marks created during ice dancing and hockey movements on ice.
What Is Being Made
These are fingerless mitts for women's medium size, featuring an open-hand design with no finger coverage. The mitts include a thumb section and extend to the cuff, providing wrist and hand warmth while leaving all fingers completely exposed for unrestricted yarn handling and needlework.
Construction Technique
The mitts are knit using a top-down construction method, beginning at the upper portion and working downward toward the cuff. The thumb is knit separately after the main body is complete, using a reverse direction technique. This construction approach allows for precise fit adjustments and straightforward finishing.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for a sock-weight yarn project. The gauge is established at 8.5 stitches by 11 rows per 1 inch, worked on US 1 (2.25 mm) needles. The left mitt begins with a cast-on of 48 stitches using a double-strand knitting-on method, where one strand is cut and fastened after the initial cast-on row. The project is worked in the round for seamless construction.
Materials and Yarn
Ice Dancing mitts are designed to be knit with 1 skein of Swiss Mountain Sea Sock yarn from Handmaiden, a premium blend containing 51% silk, 29% merino wool, and 20% seacell. This yarn provides 437 yards per 100 grams and is available in the colorway Topaz or similar alternatives. The yarn weight is classified as 3-ply and 4-ply, making it suitable for fine-gauge knitting.
Tools Required
- 2.25 mm (US 1) needles for working the main fabric
- Cable needle for stitch manipulation if needed
