Product Description
Ibisco is a bit dressier than my usual designs, but this yarn called for something special. The soft hand, hint of sheen and subtle haze needed to be played with. So this is my date sweater. Dolman sleeved, with an easy body skimming fit and a neckline that gives a hint of collarbone without being too deep or wide, it's sexy and feminine while remaining easy to wear.
I played with the traditional Dolman, creating sleeves with a fitted wrist and less "batwing" than usual. Subtle shaping at the bust tailors them in just a bit, and since the sweater is knit bottom up in the round, you can easily adjust length or shaping. The lace is simple and delicate and has a bit of texture, plus it allows you a peek of tank underneath if you feel daring. The star of the sweater is the fabric, so I've made sure there is lots of stockinette. Soft, light, with gorgeous drape. It really just begs for big jewelry and a cocktail.
Sample is in Ball and Skein Lyra. Other yarns are suggested substitutes.
Ibisco Sweater by BabyCocktails
What is Being Made
Ibisco is an elegant knitted sweater designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails, created as a sophisticated date or party garment. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a feminine, fitted sweater with a luxurious drape, ideal for evening wear paired with dark jeans, heels, and statement jewelry. The sweater showcases a refined aesthetic that balances structure with fluidity, making it suitable for cocktail occasions and nights out.
Design Features and Construction
The Ibisco features a distinctive modified dolman sleeve silhouette that offers a contemporary take on the classic 1970s style. Unlike traditional loose dolman sleeves, this design maintains a fitted wrist while providing ease through the upper arm and shoulder area, creating an elegant balance between comfort and shape. The neckline is notably high yet wide, offering a flattering cut that reveals just a hint of collarbone without excessive exposure. The open neckline design contributes to the sweater's sophisticated, versatile aesthetic.
A textured lace panel adorns the front of the sweater, adding visual interest and delicate detailing. This lace work is described as enjoyable to knit and incorporates subtle texture variation. The lace placement allows for a peek of a tank top worn beneath while maintaining the sweater's elegant appearance. The body of the sweater features stockinette stitch as the primary fabric, which beautifully showcases the yarn's exceptional qualities and contributes to the garment's refined drape.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate knitting project employs several key techniques:
- Stockinette Stitch: The predominant stitch throughout the sweater body, chosen specifically to highlight the yarn's luxurious qualities and create a smooth, refined fabric surface
- Lace Knitting: Textured lace work featured on the front panel, incorporating yarn overs and decreases to create an open, decorative pattern
- Fitted Wrist Construction: Shaping techniques to taper the dolman sleeves into fitted cuffs at the wrist
- Modified Dolman Sleeve Shaping: Strategic increases and decreases to create the contemporary dolman silhouette with structured shoulders and fitted wrists
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Ibisco is designed to be knitted with Ball and Skein Lyra, a luxurious single-ply yarn blending alpaca, wool, and silk fibers in a DK (light worsted) weight. This yarn weight classification makes it suitable for intermediate knitters and allows for detailed stitch definition in both the stockinette body and lace panels. The Lyra yarn provides 250 yards per skein, with total yardage requirements ranging from 1050 to 1500 yards depending on the desired size, accommodating multiple garment sizes from extra small through extra large.
The fiber composition of alpaca, wool, and silk creates the sweater's signature soft feel and subtle haze that designer Thea Colman specifically references as inspiring the Ibisco's elevated design. The silk component contributes to the exceptional drape and luxurious aesthetic, while the alpaca and wool provide warmth and structure. This yarn selection is essential to achieving the sweater's intended sophisticated appearance and fluid movement.
Skill Level and Project Scope
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, Ibisco requires competency with fundamental knitting techniques including stockinette stitch, lace knitting, and garment shaping. Knitters should be comfortable reading lace charts, managing yarn overs and decreases, and executing fitted sleeve construction. The project is accessible to experienced knitters seeking to expand their skills with decorative lace elements and contemporary sleeve shaping, while remaining challenging enough to engage intermediate-level crafters.
