Product Description

This is the pattern for a crocheted quiet book for learning how to count to 9. It has pictures with vivid colours where the child can search for items of different numbers. PS Picture show Norwegian front page. Both Norwegian and English charts are included.

Size The finished size of this book will vary slightly depending on what yarn, hook size and gauge, but mine measures 13 x 16 cm (5 x 6 ¼ in).

Materials • Yarn: I’ve used cotton 8/4 (sport/fine weight) that recommends a hook size 2.5-3.0 mm, but any 8/4 cotton yarn will do. Also, the colours I’ve used are just a guide, and you are of course free to choose whichever colours you like. I recommend using cotton yarn. It sheds less fibre than other fibres, it is machine washable, and it is durable. • Hook: 2.5 mm or size suiting your yarn. • Tapestry needle, scissors, and a stitch marker for binding the pages together.

Gauge My gauge is 28 sc/ 10 cm (4 in), however, gauge is not too important as long as you keep your stitches even.

I Can Count Quiet Book Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

The I Can Count Quiet Book is an interactive crochet project designed by Hilde Ropstad of Småtterier. This quiet book is a tactile, educational toy featuring numbered pages that teach counting skills. Each page is constructed individually and then assembled into a bound book format, making it an engaging handmade gift suitable for young children. The finished quiet book measures approximately 13 x 16 cm (5 x 6 ¼ inches), creating a compact, portable learning tool.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level crochet project employs several key construction techniques. Individual pages are crocheted separately before being joined together in pairs using crochet stitches. The completed pages are then sewn together using tapestry needles to create a bound book structure. The pattern specifically notes that idle yarn should not be carried inside the work, ensuring clean, finished pages. This modular construction method allows crafters to work on one page at a time, making the project manageable and customizable.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for creating structured, durable fabric. The primary stitches include:

  • Single crochet (sc) – the foundation stitch for building dense, sturdy fabric
  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for creating foundation chains and shaping
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – employed for joining rounds and connecting pages together

These basic stitches work together to create a tight, structured fabric suitable for a children's quiet book that will withstand frequent handling and play.

Materials and Yarn

The I Can Count Quiet Book requires approximately 250 grams of sport weight cotton yarn in total. The designer recommends Safran by Drops as the ideal yarn choice. Cotton yarn is specifically recommended over other fibers because it offers superior durability, can withstand high-temperature machine washing, sheds minimal fibers, and maintains its integrity through repeated use and cleaning—essential qualities for a children's toy.

Construction requires a 2.50 mm crochet hook (US size C/UK size 12) and two tapestry needles for binding the finished pages together. The recommended gauge is 28 single crochet stitches per 10 cm (4 inches), ensuring the fabric achieves the proper density and structure for this interactive project.

Pattern Format and Difficulty

This is a downloadable PDF pattern presented in US crochet terminology. The project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-part construction projects. The pattern's modular design—creating separate pages that are then assembled—provides an excellent opportunity to practice joining techniques while building a functional, gift-worthy finished object.
