Product Description

This pattern is fairly simple. It has some sewing involved and you will need to know how to do a little short rowing for feet, and decreasing for flap. Those are the most difficult sections. There is no video tutorial with this pattern, but there is written instructions and plenty of pictures to help. I have also included video links for areas of question if you want to know how to do a technique. I used a 30 peg 1/2" gauge loom and some worsted weight yarn. You can make this on different gauges but expect it will be larger or smaller depending on the gauge. You can make a bag using this but you should use the 3/4" gauge 30 peg and super bulky yarn and e-wrap. You will need 2 round buttons, 1 heart bead, and 2 melted black pony beads to glue on after sewing. That is optional. You will need some stitch markers and a crafter needle. The yardage used it very minimal and great project for scrap yarn.

Project Overview

The Hoo's Calling Cell Case is an intermediate-level loom knitting project designed to create a functional phone protector with charming decorative details. This downloadable PDF pattern combines essential loom knitting techniques with creative finishing touches, making it suitable for crafters with foundational loom knitting experience who are ready to expand their skillset.

What Is Being Made

This project produces a fitted cell phone case constructed using loom knitting methods. The finished piece features a decorative closure system and embellishments including circular buttons and a heart bead, creating both functional protection and aesthetic appeal for mobile devices.

Loom Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern incorporates a comprehensive range of loom knitting techniques that build foundational skills:

  • Cast On Methods: Chain Cast On (CH CO) technique, which involves creating a slip knot and systematically pulling working yarn through loops across pegs
  • Basic Stitches: East West (EW) knit stitch and purl stitch for creating fabric texture and structure
  • Shaping Techniques: Increases and decreases to form the case shape, internal decreases for refined shaping, and short rows for dimensional construction
  • Advanced Stitch Work: Crocodile stitch for textured detailing, yarn overs for decorative elements, and EW chain variations
  • Bind Off Methods: Standard bind off and draw string bind off for secure finishing edges
  • Special Techniques: Back of Loop (BOLB) technique used in conjunction with short rows for specific construction methods

Materials and Equipment Required

The pattern calls for specific loom knitting supplies to complete the project:

  • Loom: 30-peg ½" gauge loom (note that using a larger gauge loom will result in a proportionally larger finished case)
  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in aran weight category, approximately 65 yards total
  • Tools: Looming hook for manipulating stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern progress, and a crafters needle for weaving in ends and assembly
  • Embellishments: 2 circular buttons and 1 heart bead for decorative finishing

Pattern Support and Learning Resources

The PDF includes references to video tutorials that demonstrate the techniques used throughout the pattern, providing visual guidance for loom knitting methods including basic techniques, fine gauge work, and specialized stitches. These supplementary resources support crafters in understanding and executing each step of the construction process.

Skill Level Considerations

Classified as an intermediate project, this cell case pattern assumes familiarity with basic loom knitting fundamentals. The combination of multiple techniques—including short rows, internal decreases, and specialty stitches like crocodile stitch—makes this an excellent project for advancing beyond beginner-level loom knitting while remaining accessible to those with some prior experience.
